"the 92nd Street Y Art Center" の"Y"の謎を追ってみた。

昨日のブログに出てきたイラストレーターのMaggie Lorsonさんが副所長である92nd Street Y Art Centerの"Y"が何を意味しているのかがちょっと気になっていました。略語ならピリオドがあるはずですが、なし。単に"92Y"という表記もあるのです。

果たして、"Y"って何？

ウィキペディアでその謎が解明できました。

92nd Street Y (92Y) is a cultural and community center located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, at the corner of East 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Its full name is 92nd Street Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association (YM-YWHA). It is not part of the YMCA.

92nd Street Y (92Y)というのは、ニューヨークシティ、マンハッタンのアッパーイーストサイドにあるカルチャー＆コミュニティーセンターです。92丁目東とレキシントンアヴェニューの角にあります。正式な名称は、92nd Street Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association (YM-YWHA)---92丁目青少年ヘブライ人協会（略称YM-YWHA)です。YMCAの一部ではありません。

Jenny Kroik paints the people of New York City

My name is Jenny Kroik. I'm a painter and illustrator. I live in New York City and I teach art at 92Y. I paint very directly, and I feel like the paintings almost like a journal-like experience. It's a lot about narrative and telling a story. So if I see something during the day, or if I hear something on the news, the art a lot of times, is sort of a responsive act. I used to make fake New Yorker covers and post them just for fun.

ジェニー・クロイックです。画家で、イラストレーターです。ニューヨークシティーに住んでいて、92Yで絵画を教えています。自分でも実際描いていますが、絵画というのは日記を書く感じと似ているなと思っています。会話やお話をすることと共通することが多いのです。ですから、一日の中で何かをみたり、ニュースで何かを聞いたりしたら、絵を描くことが責任ある行動のようなものになることがよくあるのです。私はかつて『ニューヨーカー』
の表紙を自分で勝手に書いて冗談で（友人に）送ったことがあります。

And then my friend said, "You should send it to them." And I just decided I'm gonna start sending, you know, five or six ideas every month, and that was a good excercise for me. And I was really shocked, one day they said, "We'll use it." So, .... it's not just me being a lonely person painting. It’s this collaboration with everything that's around you. As an artist, you filter through all the information, you decide what's relevant to what you wanna say, but in a way it's already there.

そしたら、友人が、「編集者に送りなよ。」と言ったので、実際送り始めることにしたのです。毎月５枚か６枚は送ったと思います。それが私にとってはいい練習だったのです。そしたら、驚いたことにある日、編集者の方に「使わせてもらうよ。」と言われたのです。というわけで。。。ひとりで描くというのではなく、周りに起こっているすべてのものとのコラボとなりました。皆さんは、アーティストとして、全ての情報を通して自分が言いたいことと関連付けて描いてみてください。つまり、言いたいことは、そこにあるってこと。

日本からの留学生もいるでしょうね。
