ニューヨークの冬は寒いです。冬の間に降る雪は平均で28.5インチ(72.4cm)ですが、今年は約40インチ(102cm)でした。、
ニューヨークのセントラルパークは、大都会の真ん中にあるとは思えないほど緑が豊かな場所です。何度行っても新しい発見があり、隅々まで行きつくすには一体何回そこを訪れたらいいのだろうと思うほどです。

新型コロナウィルス拡大の影響で、病院にベッドが足りなくなった時には、セントラルパークにベッド数を確保する緊急のテントがたてられました。

日本に負けないくらい美しいセントラルパークの春を画像や動画を交えながら、ご紹介します。資料は、セントラルパーク自然保護団体から届いたメールの抜粋です。

①　Cherry Hill

桜は日本のものだけではないですよ。ニューヨークでもお花見を楽しむことができます。

Named for the cherry trees that bloom in this landscape each spring, Cherry Hill is a popular destination overlooking the Lake.
この景観の中で毎春花を咲かせる桜という木の名前をつけたチェリーヒルは湖を見渡せる人気の場所です。

Its sloping lawn is an ideal place for picnicking, relaxing, and enjoying views of rowboats on the water. Visitors flock to Cherry Hill in spring to enjoy the pink and white blooms of the Yoshino cherry trees.

ここの傾斜がついている芝生地はピクニックやリラックス、湖に浮かぶボートの眺めを楽しむのに理想的な場所です。吉野桜のピンクと白の花を楽しむために春にはチェリーヒルに多くの人が訪れます。

At the top of the hill, visitors will find Cherry Hill Fountain, designed by Jacob Wrey Mould as a drinking fountain for horses. It forms the centerpiece of an open plaza connected to the 72nd Street Drive that served as a place for carriage riders to rest, water their horses, and take in views of the [Lake]. The concourse is still a resting point and viewing spot for those in carriages, as well as pedicabs and bicyclists.

Within a circular concourse in Cherry Hill is Cherry Hill Fountain, an elegant fountain surrounded by a circular path and colorful blooms.

チェリーヒルの円形状のコンコースの中に、チェリーヒルファウンテンはあります。それは、円形の道とカラフルな花たちによって囲まれたエレガントなファウンテンです。

The fountain's water flows from eight small flowers into a circle of bowls, eventually spilling into a bluestone basin. Cherry Hill Fountain was originally meant as a drinking fountain for horses, but in modern times, birds drink from the six cups on the fountain’s main stem. Cherry Hill Fountain is now a popular spot for photographers and filmmakers alike.

③ NELL SINGER LILAC WALK
ネル・シンガーライラックウォーク

Along the north edge of the Sheep Meadow, a narrow path winds through a small grove of lilac trees with varieties from all over the world.
シープメドウの北の端にそって、細い曲がりくねった小道が世界中から集めた様々な種類のライラックがある小さな林を抜けて続いています。

Typically in bloom from late April through June, their fragrant and colorful blossoms are a seasonal highlight for many Park visitors. The planting of these lilacs was funded by the philanthropist Nell Signer in 1970. A plaque placed at the site reminds visitors that “even during periods of harsh conflict and confrontation, the delicate beauty and fragrance of the lilac have been faithful annual reminders of lovelier aspects in human relations.”

普通ライラックは４月下旬から６月にかけて花をつけます。その香りとカラフルな花は多くの来園者の季節のハイライトです。ライラックの植え付けは1970年に慈善家のネイル・シンガーによってなされました。その場所にあるプラークを見ると次のように書かれています。「激しい争いと対立の間でも、ライラックのこの繊細な美しさと香りは人間関係により美しい一面があるのだということを毎年思い起こさせてくれる」
