動画を見て、地下鉄の標識を作っている人たちに会おう！

昨日は、ニューヨークの地下鉄の標識についての内容でしたが、今日は実際そこで働いている人の様子を動画で見てみましょう。リスニングは、前知識があればかなり聞き取れる内容が増えます。
スクリプトも載せますので、自然に意味が入ってくるまで繰り返すと効果的です。約１分半の動画です。

When you ride the subways a lot, it's easy to take signage for granted but clear signs are crucial to effective track.

地下鉄にしょっちゅう乗っていれば、標識があるのは実に当たり前と思うでしょうが、効率的に電車を走らせるにははっきりした案内は欠かせません。

Hi, my name is Barry, and I'm a sign painter at station signage. It's a very small shop and there's only 11 of us and we produce a tremendous amount of work. We do the survey and design of our signage. We go out to the station, inspect the areas and see what needs to be done. Then those work orders are made and they're sent over here to the sign shop.

こんにちは、バリーです。駅の標識を作っているサインペインターです。ここはとても小さな工場です。たった11人ですごい量の標識を作る仕事をしています。調査をして標識のデザインをします。駅に行ってその場所をしらべ、必要なことを確認します。それから注文が決定して、工場に送られてくるのです。

We examine the work order and then we go and lay out the design that they provided for us. We cut out those letters at that time we read them, we apply transfer tape and then apply it to the material that we are using.

私たちは注文内容をよくチェックしてから、言われたとおりにデザインをレイアウトしていきます。文字を切り抜いて、読んで、転写テープを施し、使用する土台にそれを貼っていきます。

At that time, we laminate the sign and we take it into the tin shop to be bent. The tin shop is very important to our operation. They give us the material to make the signs out of. After we design, define, and fabricate. They then go back into the tin shop where they would been assigned into the shapes or the signs that we need for installation. We have an average of 99 thousand times a year. The environment is like a close-knit family. Guys I work with here they are all tradesmen and they take this their job with pride. It's just a privilege to go out there put these signs out to the public and know that they help people.

そして、その標識にラミネート加工を施し、成型工場に送って曲げてもらいます。この作業はとても重要な工程です。成型工場から標識となる材料が来て、我々がデザインして、（どういうものにするか）決定してから作製します。それから、また成型工場に戻って、取り付けるのに必要な形やサインになります。１年で平均９万９千回（このことを繰り返し）やります。（職場）環境は親戚の集まりのような感じです。ここで一緒に働く人たちは熟練工で、プライドを持ってやっています。工場を出てそのサインを皆さんの前に出し、役に立ってるんだと思うことが我々の特権です。
