この博物館は、正式名称が、"Museum of the City of New York"であるように、「ニューヨークという街についての博物館」で、様々なジャンルから、「ニューヨーク」という街のもつユニークな側面を展示解説しています。

音楽関係の展示も充実していて、昨日のブログでは「スプリングガラ」で80年代の音楽に焦点を当てたイベントを紹介しました。今日はホームページから、「ニューヨークジャズ」についてトランペッターのベニー・ベナックが話している動画をとりあげます。

What Makes New York New York?

Is New York the center of the jazz universe? To musician Benny Benack III, coming here was like going to the mecca of jazz music.

何がニューヨークをニューヨークたらしめているのか？
ミュージシャンのベニー・ベナック３世にとって、ニューヨークに行くと言うことはジャズのメッカに行くということでした。

New York City to me sill always be the center of the jazz universe, you know, as a young jazz musician moving to New York was visiting some place mythical. It was like going to the mecca. And that's because jazz musicians have always made a name for themselves here. There have been other great jazz cities in the history of the music of course. New Orleans, the birthplace, Chicago was a big one. Pittsburgh, my hometown, birthed a lot of great musicians. But New York it's just something different about it. 

僕にとって、ニューヨークっていうのは、いつもジャズ界の中心にあるんだ。ニューヨークにやってくる若いジャズミュージシャン（の一人である僕）は、メッカ巡礼のような伝説的な場所としてニューヨークに来ていたんだ。ジャズミュージシャンはいつもここで名をあげて来ているからね。もちろん音楽の歴史の中で他にも素晴らしいジャズの街はあるよ。ニューオーリンズはジャズ発祥の地だし、シカゴだってすごいし、ピッツバーグは僕の故郷だけど多くのミュージシャンを輩出してる。だけど、ニューヨークはちょっと違うんだ。

The scene here is one of a kind and nothing typifies that nothing is more New York than the fact that you can go out in the middle of the week on a work night. And here music not only in one or two clubs but literally in a dozen jazz clubs you can hear live music until six in the morning. And you don't even have to know who's playing at these clubs. It's going to be the best music in the world and that is just something you don't find in other cities not in this country, not in the world. 

この場所で起こっていることは他にはない。明日は仕事だっていう週の真ん中に(ジャズを聴きに）出かけて行く何てことができるのはニューヨークだけでしょ。他ではないよね。ニューヨークの音楽はひとつやふたつのクラブだけじゃなくて実際多くのジャズクラブがあって、朝６時までライブやってるよ。そこで誰が演奏してるかなんて知らなくたっていいんだ。それが世界で最も素晴らしい音楽を聴いてるってことになるし、（こういうことは）他の街にはないし、この国や世界中見ても（ニューヨークと）同じ所はないね。

 And of course if you are a musician like me, you're hanging out with the cats. You finish the gig,  you go hear somebody else play, you've been to two or three on a Wednesday night. Now it's about 4 30 in the morning, you're gonna be hungry and uh you know only in New York can the band then go to a diner or a Thai restaurant or a Spanish restaurant or an Indian restaurant whatever food you want. You can hang out, you can keep drinking if you want until the sun comes up. You get your breakfast and then everybody goes home and sleeps all day. And throws on a suit and heads back out, and does it again the next night.

もちろん、僕のようなミュージシャンなら、仲間とワイワイやってるよね。ステージが終わって、他の人の演奏を聴きに行ったり、水曜日の夜に２，３軒はしごしたりしたこともある。今、朝の４時半ごろなんだけど、お腹空かない？あのさ、ニューヨークだけだよ、バンドのやつらがダイナーに行ったり、タイレストランに行ったり、スペインレストランに行ったり、インド料理の店に行ったりできるのは。食べたいものが何だってあるんだ。太陽が昇ってくるまで、遊べるし、飲める。それから朝食を食べて家に帰って一日中寝るんだ。そしてまたスーツを羽織って仕事に出かけるのさ。毎晩この繰り返し。

(※この"cats"というのは「ジャズミュージシャン」の愛称です。そういえば、日本にジャズが入ってきたころ、「クレイジーキャッツ」というバンドがありました。。。）

Benack, 23, has become the third jazz musician in this area to bear his name. The Upper St. Clair native is spending most of his time in New York City — although he is in Pittsburgh frequently — doing gigs in the trumpeter-singing tradition of Chet Baker. He also is working on his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music.

ベナックは、23歳。彼の名前を有名にしたこのエリアで３代目のジャズミュージシャンとなった。（ペンシルベニア州）アッパーストリートクレア生まれで、ピッツバーグにはよくいくものの、現在はほとんどニューヨーク市内で活躍している。チェット・ベイカーのような歌えるトランぺッターとしてライブでコンサートを開いている。また、マンハッタンの音楽学校で修士課程に在籍している。

He started playing piano when he was 5, and, in those early days, often sang with the band of his reed-playing father.

５歳の時にピアノを始め、幼児期はリードプレイヤーの父のバンドで歌うこともよくあった。

Staying out of direct competition with his dad, Benack started on the trumpet at 9, and found he liked it.

父親の後を継ぐことはせず、９歳の時にトランペットを始め、気に入ってその道に進んだ。

At this point, he says, his is focusing on a life in music. Whether as a jazz star, a hard-working free-lancer or an educator, he feels sure he will be happy.

現在彼の生活は音楽中心だ。ジャズスター、仕事熱心なフリーランス、教育者、何であれ彼はハッピーになれるのだ。

課外学習出来ていた2年生くらいの小学生に、先生が、"What do you think makes New York creative?"と質問していたのを思い出しました。
ここでは"What do you think makes New York New York?"（何がニューヨークをニューヨークたらしめていると思いますか？）になりますが、"New York"を自分の出身地や、住んでいる街に変えたり、ディスカッションしたり、エッセイを書いてみるといいと思います。
