ニューヨークの大型トラックの免許証はどのような分類になっているのか？

New Yorkには、"Department of Motor Vehicles---自動車課"という部署があって、そこで免許証が交付されます。その種類がすごく細かいのです。二輪車まで含めると、９種類もあります。

これがその説明書です。

一番右の欄に、"Endosement　Codes"と書いてありますね。
アルファベットで具体的にどういう車が運転できるのかが示してあるわけです。

次に、アルファベットが表す車の種類を書いておきます。

F    →　Farm Class A Vehicles 　　　農場用車　Aクラス
Ｇ　→　Farm Class B Vehicles    農場用車　Ｂクラス
Ｈ　→　Hazardous Materials    危険物運搬車
Ｍ　→　Metal Coil 金属コイル
N    →　Tank Vehicles    タンクローリー
P　→　Passenger Transport    乗客の輸送
R →    Recreational Vehicles GVWR over 26,000lbs
   観光バス重量(Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)約11.8t以上
Ｓ　→　School Bus スクールバス
Ｔ　→　Doubles/Triples 　　　　　    ２階３階だて
Ｗ　→　Tow Truck    牽引車
X →　Tank/Hazmat 危険物/タンクローリー

ここでは、日本でいういわゆる大型トラックの免許にあたる、Class A, B, Cの詳細だけ読みます。

【Class A】

〈Minimum age〉　　　　　　　最少年齢

Combination---such as tractor-trailer or truck-trailer
２種類つながっているもの---トラクター＋トレイラー　・　トラック＋トレイラー　など

Gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of more than 26,000 pounds provided the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or GCWR of vehicle(s) being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.
1台でも複数でも牽引されている車の重量が4.5tを越え、全体で11.8tを越えるもの。

【Class B】

〈Minimum age〉　　　　　　　最少年齢

〈Vehicle Type〉　　　　　　　車のタイプ

Single---such as heavy single unit truck or bus
シングルタイプ---大型のシングルトラック、またはバス

GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds
(Class B may tow vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, or may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 pounds providing the GCWR is not more than 26,000 pounds)
総重量が11.8tを越えるもの。
（Ｂクラスでは4.5tを越えないものや、総重量が11.8tを越えないものであれば牽引することができる。）

【ＣＤＬ　Ｃクラス】　　　　Commercial Driver’s License---商用車免許　　Ｃクラス　

〈Minimum age〉　　　　　　　最少年齢
　　21 　　　　　　　　　　　　 21歳　
（18--- No interstate commerce. Cannot transport hazardous materials or operate a school bus.）
（ニューヨーク州外であれば、18歳も可。ただし、危険物は不可。スクールバス不可。）

GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less that:
Transports 15 or more passengers: OR
Transports passengers under Article 19-A of the V & T Law, OR
Carries Hazardous Materials
(Class C may tow vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, or may tow a vehicle of more than 10,000 pounds providing the GCWR is not more than 26,000 pounds)

総重量11.8t以下であれば、次の内容も可。
15人以上の乗客。
道路交通法19条A項に基づいての乗客輸送。
危険物運搬。
（4.5t以下であれば牽引できる。総重量が11.8tを越えなければ4.5tを越えるもの　　　　　　　　　でも牽引できる。）

試験が大変だと思います。法律も覚える必要がありそうです。
