ニューヨークの消防士のワクチン義務化反対集会に見る抗議の形

高校の英語のテキストにも、消防士にあこがれる子供の話がありましたね。感動的な実話でした。消防士は危険な中で市民の命を救うヒーローです。

今日はそんな消防隊員のコロナワクチン義務化に対する抗議集会についてなのですが、これまでの集会にはないものを感じたので取り上げました。

FDNY firefighters continue to balk at the city COVID-19 vaccination mandate — at the expense of their Bravest brothers and sisters who are inoculated.

On Thursday, four days after Mayor de Blasio’s mandate went into effect, city firefighters were only 77% immunized, forcing smoke eaters who have gotten the shot to pick up the slack and work overtime, FDNY officials said.

木曜日、デブラシオ市長のワクチン義務化が発効した４日後、市の消防士の77%しか接種を受けておらず、接種を受けた消防士たちが穴埋めとして時間外労働をしなくてはならなくなったと消防局職員が言った。

At the same time, FDNY emergency medical technicians and paramedics have gotten with the program. The service is now 90% vaccinated — a massive jump from 61% a week earlier, City Hall officials said.

With so many EMS members getting vaccinated, mandatory overtime is canceled and it will return to normal operations on Friday, fire department officials said.

After every shift, FDNY dispatchers order firefighters to “stay in their firehouses to await reassignment” so they can be fill spots left vacant by unvaccinated workers. While an FDNY official said an alert like that was common, firefighters said it has been heard with more frequency since employees are put on unpaid status and thousands of firefighters called in sick in an attempt to skirt the mandate.

Despite the lack of manpower, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said that only four FDNY units were out of service Thursday because of the manpower shortage.

人員は不足していたが、そのために木曜日に出動できなかったのはたった４つのFDNYユニットだったと消防局長のダニエル・ニグロは言った。

“So far we have been holding the line very well,” Nigro said, adding that four units shutting down “was fewer on most days of any given year.”

The number of firefighters going out sick has also dropped, FDNY officials said. About 2,400 firefighters called in sick last week. That number dwindled down to about 2,000 by Thursday.

Fire and EMS unions fought the mandate since its inception, claiming weekly COVID tests for unvaccinated employees had kept everyone safe. The Mayor should have hammered out a vaccination compromise with union leaders instead of threatening to take away workers’ pay, they said.

消防・救急職員組合は当初からワクチン接種の義務化と闘っており、未接種の隊員に対する毎週のコロナの検査で全員の安全は保たれてきたと主張している。市長は隊員たちの給料を出さないというのではなく、組合のリーダーたちとの妥協案を出すべきだったのだ。

Last Thursday, hundreds of city employees held two anti-mandate rallies including one outside Gracie Mansion.

先週の木曜日何百人もの市の職員が義務化反対の集会を２つ開いた。その一つはグレイシー・マンション（ニューヨーク市長公邸）の外で行ったものだった。

Many marchers insisted they are not against the vaccine just against the mandate.

集会に参加している多くの人は、ワクチン接種に反対しているのではなく、義務化に反対しているのだということを強調した。

“It’s not about the fricking vaccine,” said one firefighters union member. “It’s about the city not stepping on our nuts.”

「抗議しているのはワクチンなんかについてのことじゃないんだよ。市が俺たちへの誠意ある対応をしないってことを言ってるんだ。」と一人の消防組合メンバーは言った。

Many in the crowd held American flags aloft along with some “Trump 2024″ and “Don’t Tread on Me” banners. The more extreme signs included racist language, and there was even a swastika. The throng was almost entirely unmasked.

抗議集会に集まった人たちの中にはアメリカの国旗を掲げていた者も多く、それと共に「トランプ2024」や「押し付けるな」というバナーもあった。さらに極端なものには人種差別的なものもあり、まんじ印さえ見えた。集まった人たちはほとんどマスクをしていなかった。

Six Brooklyn firefighters were suspended Friday before the mandate kicked in because they allegedly took their rig, with emergency lights flashing, to State Sen. Zellnor Myrie’s office and demanded to know where he lives.

Four of the on-duty firefighters told the Myrie’s staff that the city mandate meant “blood would be on (the) hands” of the democrat — who had nothing to do with the order for city workers to get vaccinated or get sent home without pay.
