The jury in the defamation trial in Virginia between the actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard found that Mr. Depp had been defamed in a 2018 op-ed, a verdict that handed the actor a victory in his long, messy battle over domestic abuse allegations.

But the jury’s decision was split, also finding that one of the three statements at the center of Ms. Heard’s lawsuit, by one of Mr. Depp’s lawyers at the time, had been defamatory.

Many of the allegations aired in the courtroom were already heard in a British case — which Mr. Depp lost — in which the actor sued The Sun newspaper calling him a “wife beater” in a headline.

The case, which started with opening arguments on April 12, went to the jury on May 27. Deliberations were paused during the holiday weekend, during which Mr. Depp made a pair of surprise appearances onstage in England, performing with the guitar player Jeff Beck at two of his concerts.

On Tuesday the jurors asked the court a question that was related to the headline of Ms. Heard’s op-ed: “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” The headline, which Ms. Heard has said she was not involved in writing, is one of three portions of the op-ed that were at issue in Mr. Depp’s defamation case; the others included the sentence about her being a “public figure representing domestic abuse” and a passage about seeing “how institutions protect men accused of abuse.”

The jury questioned whether, in the instructions given to them by the court, they were being asked to decide whether just the headline was false, or the entire op-ed was. After consulting with lawyers on both sides, Judge Penney S. Azcarate responded that the jurors were being asked, in that instance, whether the headline itself was false — not the entire op-ed.
