ニューヨークタイムズの、「サマー・リーディング・コンテスト」は、中高生に挑戦できる機会を与えています。学校で参加を義務付けているところもあるようですが、基本的には自由参加です。

そして、決してハードルの高いものではなく、自分の興味のあるものを選んで、自分の意見を書いてみるというシンプルなものです。

Even before the reading contests, I used the New York Times as like a source for my writing. I sort of mustered up the courage to at least submit one response because I wanted to voice my opinion and I felt pretty strongly about the subjects.

読書コンテストの前から、私はニューヨークタイムズを自分のライティングの参考資料として使っていました。勇気を奮い起こして、一回提出して見ようと思いました。自分の意見を書きたかったし、テーマについて強く感じるものがあったからです。

I actually found out about the summer reading contest through my school. In my school, every junior who are taking the an English class are required to submit to the summer reading contest and respond to different articles. And as a rising sophomore I was intrigued by this requirement while looking through my school website and I decided to give it a try.

実は、サマー・リーディング・コンテストのことは、学校を通じて知りました。私の学校では、英語の授業を受けている3年生全員が、サマー・リーディング・コンテストに応募し、さまざまな記事について意見を書かなければなりません。私が2年生になった時、学校のホームページを見て、このコンテストに興味を持ち、挑戦してみることにしました。

One piece of advice I'd give to future summer reading contestants is to not be afraid to voice
your opinions. I know personally it can be scary to state what's on your mind especially if you disagree with someone, but as long as you're respectful and don't take the disagreement to heart, then you should ultimately be confident in your writing.

これからサマー・リーディング・コンテストに応募するみなさんへのアドバイスとしては、「声を出すことを恐れないこと」です。特に誰かと意見が食い違う場合は、個人的に自分の思っていることを述べるのは怖いことだと思います。特に誰かと意見が食い違う場合は。でも、尊敬の念を持ち、反対意見を気にしなければ、最終的には自分の書いたものに自信を持てるはずです。

Really be vulnerable through your writing and explore your own voice and really make that personal connection. And I think that's what makes a piece of writing important to me as well as makes it feel personable to the readers.

文章を書きながら自分の弱い部分を知り、自分の意見を探し、自分自身のものの考え方を形作ってください。そうなるとそれは自分にとって大切なライティングとなり、読者にとっても魅力的なライティングになると思うのです。

コンテストで優勝したことについて

It was very surprising and I was extremely happy and confident actually so and when I got the email saying I won, I yelled out loud much to my parents and siblings.　

とても驚きましたし、実際にとても嬉しくて自信があったので、優勝したというメールをもらったときは、両親や兄弟に大声で叫んでしまいました。

Winning the summer reading contest was a huge encouragement for me and really allowed
me to look at writing as something that is part of my interest and something I really wanted to explore more.

サマー・リーディング・コンテストでの受賞は、私にとって大きな励みとなり、そのお陰で、文章を書くことに自分は興味を持っており、もっと探求してみたいと考えるようになりました。

With language arts and writing kind of being some of my favorite subjects, it kind of really boosted my confidence in my writing abilities.

国語と作文が好きな私にとって、ライティング力に対する自信が大きくなりました。

My main interest is actually visual arts so I do a lot of drawing and painting. And I always thought you know visual arts is the only source I could express myself in. This summer through writing and through really being vulnerable with my words I was able to discover a new way of explaining my emotions and I guess winning really was just an extra push for me to go on and explore and tell my own story the words.

私は主にビジュアルアーツに興味があり、絵を描いたりすることが多いです。そしてビジュアルアーツは私が自分を表現できる唯一の手段だといつも思っていました。この夏、文章を書くこと、そして言葉に弱いことを乗り超えながら、自分の感情を言葉で表する新しい方法を発見することができたのです。そしてこの優勝は、私の考え、言葉を探求し続けるための励みになったと思います。
