NYC's air quality among world's worst due to Canada wildfire smoke

Anyone who was in the Bay Area almost three years ago remembers the day the sky turned orange that was September 9th. It was due to poor air quality caused by smoke from the wildfires burning across the state. It was so weird as you may remember surreal. Now, hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada are creating a similar effect. The smoke and haze is also affecting millions of Americans in the Midwest and the Northeast, sparking air quality alerts there. Reporter Laura Aguirre has the story.

３年前、ベイエリアにいた人は、9月9日、空がオレンジ色に染まった日を覚えていることでしょう。州のあちこちで発生した山火事の煙で、大気の状態が悪くなったためでした。その時の空模様は、まさに現実とは思えないものでした。現在、カナダでは何百もの山火事が発生し、同様の現象を作り出しています。この煙と霞は、中西部と北東部の何百万人ものアメリカ人にも影響を及ぼしており、同地では大気汚染警報が発令されています。

From the city that never sleeps to the city that can barely breathe. New York briefly topping the list of world's worst air quality Tuesday by IQair.com, iconic views are in a haze as smoke from Canadian wildfires drift in to the U.S.

「眠らない街」から「息苦しい街」へ。IQair.comが発表した「世界で最も空気の悪い都市」ランキングでは、火曜日、ニューヨークが一時トップに立ち、象徴的な景色は、カナダの山火事による煙が米国に流れ込んだため、霞がかかったようになっています。

Across the Northeast and Mideast, millions of people are under varying air quality alerts. Several cities designated as having unhealthy air for sensitive groups meaning small children and the elderly should reduce outdoor activity in parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Another threat Tuesday, lightning, rare dry thunderstorms are forecast in the mid-Atlantic region where Noa's Storm Prediction Center says conditions are primed for possible wildfire spread.
 
北東部と中東部で、何百万人もの人々にさまざまな大気汚染警報が出されています。ペンシルバニア州とニュージャージー州の一部では、小さな子供や高齢者は屋外での活動を控えたほうがいいとして、不健康な空気にさらされる都市がいくつか指定されています。もう一つの脅威は火曜日の雷です。大西洋中部では稀に乾燥した雷雨(（上空でできた雨滴が地上に達しないもの）が予想され、NOA（(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration---全米海洋大気庁）のストーム予想センターでは山火事が広がりやすい条件にあると述べています。

Canadian officials say they're currently tracking more than 400 active fires and at least 26 thousand people were forced to evacuate insure of what they have left.

カナダ当局によると、現在400件以上の火災が確認されており、少なくとも2万6千人が避難を余儀なくされたとのことです。

"I want to go home, and I'm sure that everybody else here does too."

The country's prime minister making a public appeal for donations to help fire victims.

"People can support their neighbors who are facing incredibly devastating losses all across the country."

Back in the U.S. forecasters are watching a cold front that could push the smoke further south and east before weekend.

予報によると、米国では、寒冷前線の影響により、週末までに煙がさらに南や東に移動する可能性があります。
