ニューヨークの公立高校が、カナダの山火事による空気汚染の広がりの影響を受けて休校になりました。また、コロナのときと同じようにリモート授業になりました。

New York City public high schools will pivot to remote learning on Friday as the risk of poor local air quality persists from Canadian wildfires, while many charter and Catholic schools planned to keep classrooms open.

Students and staff in public schools serving grades 9-12 and 6-12 that were scheduled to attend classes will do so virtually — while most other schools will proceed as planned with a clerical day off. Those staffers will be able to work from home.

9-12年生および6-12年生の公立学校では教室での授業が行われる予定でしたが、バーチャルになります。一方その他のほとんどの学校では、休校扱いで予定通り授業を行います。先生たちは自宅から授業を行うことも可能になります。

The shift is expected to impact roughly 290,000 students, including those in alternative programs, who otherwise would have learned in person, city data show.

Some custodial, maintenance and school-food staff will still have to report to schools in person.

“This is the right decision to ensure our families, staff and students remain safe during these times,” wrote Councilwoman Rita Joseph (D-Brooklyn), chair of the education committee, on Twitter.

Others were less convinced that the city made the right call with several end-of-year events — from park visits and field trips to carnivals and proms — planned for Friday. NYC public school students had Thursday off for the obscure school holiday Anniversary Day — better known as Brooklyn-Queens Day.

一方、いくつか学年末のイベント（公園やその他の場所での校外学習、お祭りや学年末パーティーなど）が金曜日に予定されていたため、市の判断に納得しない意見もありました。木曜日は、ニューヨークの公立学校の生徒たちにとっては、ブルックリン・クイーンズ・デイといった、特に祝う目的のない休校日でした。

“This class of seniors were freshmen when COVID hit,” said a high school teacher in Queens, who was not authorized to speak with the press. “They are familiar with things being taken away from them and told what they can and can’t do after looking forward to all these important events.”

「コロナに襲われた時、（今の）高校三年生は一年生でした」、「彼らは、こうした大切な行事を楽しみにしていたのですが、その機会が奪われることに慣れていて、できることとできないことがあるのだと言われています。」とクィーンズ区の高校の先生は個人的な見解として、報道機関に話しました。

“The Class of 2023 is the class of endless disappointments,” she said.
