プラネタリウムに行ったことがありますか？学校の校外学習で行ったり、ご家族で行ったりしたことがあるかもしれません。

季節ごとに変わる星座や、地球が大きな銀河系の隅にある「太陽系」と言われるシステムのなかのひとつの惑星に過ぎないこと、その周りを月が周り、地球は太陽の周りを周っていることを大きなスクリーンの中で見せてくれたことでしょう。

アメリカ自然史博物館にもプラネタリウムがあります。そこでは来年の12月末まで、 "Worlds Beyond Earth"というテーマで地球と宇宙の関係を見せてくれます。どのような演出をしているのでしょう？

今日は、学芸員の人たちの説明を動画で見てみたいと思います。（実際のほんの一部ですので、アメリカ自然史博物館に来る機会があれば、必ずプラネタリウムに行くことを忘れないでね。）

This space show, Worlds Beyond Earth, focuses on the worlds in our solar system.
And what we've learned by going to them is that they're more active than we thought they were. Some have magnetic field, some have oceans, others have atmospheres. Processes we recognize from our Earth but that are different on these other worlds.

この宇宙ショー『Worlds Beyond Earth』は、太陽系内の惑星に焦点を当てています。

We could define the term "world" in different ways, but for me I think it's about any object that can tell us the history of where our solar system came from.
 
 「世界」という言葉の定義はさまざまですが、私にとってそれは、太陽系がどこから来たのか、その歴史を我々に示すすべての天体のことです。

 These objects could be small, just a few kilometers in diameter, or something the size of Jupiter, but they all have an important part of that story to tell us.

これらの天体は、直径数キロの小さなものから木星ほどの大きさのものまでありますが、どれもその物語を私たちに語る重要な役割を持っています。

We know abut these worlds because we've gone there.　If we hadn't gone there with our instrumentation or our astronauts, we'd be still back in the era of looking at these things from the ground with telescopes.

We've been exploring our solar system for 60 years and in that time we've learned amazing things. We've learned by going to those places and exploring them with orbiters, with flybys, with landers.

And we learn about these planets but then we learn from them about our own planet.
This show will create a sense of wonder about the solar system, but most especially about our own Earth and how unique and wonderful it is that this planet, where complex life and humans have evolved, is so different from these other places.

そしてこれらの惑星について学び、さらにそこから私たちの惑星について学んできました。
このショーをご覧になると、太陽系について、特に私たちの住む地球について、そして複雑な生命と人類が進化したこの惑星が、他の惑星とどれほど違っているということについて、これらがいかに特別で素晴らしいことなのかという感覚をお持ちになるでしょう。

There's activity everywhere, and our solar system is still evolving and changing.
