メトロポリタンダイアリーで年末のニューヨークでの出来事を知る。

今日は、クリスマスイブですね。今日と明日は、メトロポリタンダイアリーという、ニューヨークタイムズに掲載されている読者のエッセイの中から、年末の人々の様子を綴ったエッセイを取り上げようと思います。（メトロポリタンダイアリーでは、出来事の起こった年は今年に限られていません。）

Christmas ’64
1964年のクリスマス

It was the week after Christmas 1964. I was a Delta stewardess on a 24-hour layover staying at the Belmont Plaza Hotel at Lexington and 49th Street.

1964年のクリスマスの翌週。私はデルタ航空のスチュワーデスで、レキシントン通りと49丁目の交差点にあるベルモント・プラザ・ホテルで24時間待機をしていました。

I went on a marathon shopping spree, taking advantage of the after-Christmas sales. Afterward, I returned to the hotel restaurant for dinner.

I noticed a man sitting across the room in a booth. He came over and introduced himself. He was a naval aviator on leave and enjoying New York City.

向かいのブースに座っている男性に気づきました。彼はやってきて自己紹介しました。彼は休暇中の海軍飛行士で、ニューヨークを楽しんでいると言いました。

We had dinner together. I excused myself early as our crew had a 5 a.m. wake-up call. When it came, we were told our flight had been canceled until the next day. Something about fog in Atlanta.

I went down to the restaurant for breakfast and the aviator was there. We had breakfast together. Later we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and had lunch.

That night we saw the play “Ben Franklin in Paris” and had dinner at Jack Dempsey’s restaurant. I think Dempsey was there that night.

その夜、私たちは『パリのベン・フランクリン』という演劇を観て、ジャック・デンプシーのレストランで夕食をとりました。その夜は、このレストランのオーナーで、ボクシングの世界ヘビー級チャンピオンでもあったデンプシーも来ていたと思います。

The next day, I flew back to my base in Dallas. He flew back to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas. We were married later that year and for 38 years until his death in 2003. Thank you, N.Y.C.

翌日、私は飛行機でダラス空港に戻りました。彼はテキサス州のコーパスクリスティ海軍航空基地に戻りました。私たちはその年の暮れに結婚し、2003年に彼が亡くなるまで38年間連れ添いました。ありがとう、N.Y.C.

I was on my way in to see “The Collaboration.” A security guard who was checking my purse paused when he saw the small shopping bag I had. Looking inside, he was obviously curious about the 10 small bags I had there.

私は『ザ・コラボレーション』を観に行く途中でした。私のバッグをチェックしていた警備員の動きが、小さな買い物袋を見て止まりました。中に入っていた10個の小袋を見て、明らかに興味を示したのです。

He looked me in the eye, tilted his head back and cooed.

彼は私の目を見て、首を後ろに傾けて、ウーンッと小さく声を上げました。

“These are candied pecans,” I explained, hoping they wouldn’t be confiscated. “I’m meeting friends inside, and I always make them for the holidays.”

「それ、ピーカンの砂糖漬けなんです。中で友達に会うから、あげようと思って。いつも休みの日に作っているんです。」と没収されないように願って説明しました。

“Ooh, I love pecans!” he said in a deep drawl.

彼は、「ピーカン、大好きなんです。」と低いゆっくりした声で言いました。

“I’m so sorry,” I said. “I brought only enough for my friends.”

私は、「ごめんなさい。友達の分しか持ってこなかったんです。」と言いました。

When the show was over, the same gentleman was holding the door to the street open as the crowd made its way out. As luck would have it, one of my friends had not been able to make it, leaving with me with an extra bag of nuts.

ショーが終わると、その警備員の男性は観客が外に出ていく間、通りへのドアを抑えていました。運のいいことに、友人の一人は間に合わなかったので、私は手に余った一袋のピーカンの砂糖漬けを持っていました。。

I paused in the doorway and placed the bag in the man’s hand.

私は出口で立ち止まり、その袋をその警備員の手に置きました。

“Merry Christmas, sir!” I said.

「メリークリスマス！」と私は言いました。

His smile lit up the street.

彼の笑顔で通りが照らされたようでした。
