SVAの70年以上に渡るポスターが180枚以上!

今日はニューヨーク市にある、もうひとつの芸術大学の「ザ・スクール・オブ・ヴィジュアルアーツ」（SVA）についてです。

MisTyが注目したのは、この大学が長年にわたって地下鉄のポスターを作っていたという点です。昨日ご紹介した、ミルトン・グレイザーの作品の他に、どんなものがあったのか、過去のポスターも探してみたいと思います。

まず、The School of Visual Arts （SVA)についてです。

In 1947, Silas H. Rhodes and illustrator Burne Hogarth founded the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, with a faculty composed of New York City-based professionals working in the arts (a practice that continues to this day). Reflecting the belief that there is more to art than technique and that learning to become an artist is not the same as learning a trade, Silas H. Rhodes renamed the institution School of Visual Arts in 1956.

1947年、サイラス・H・ローズとイラストレーターのバーン・ホガースが、カートゥーニスト＆イラストレーターズ・スクールを設立しました。それは、ニューヨークを拠点に芸術分野で活躍するプロフェッショナルで構成された教授陣を擁したものです（このスタイルは現在も続いています）。サイラス・H・ローズは、芸術には技術以上のものがあり、芸術家になるために学ぶことは商売を学ぶこととは違うという信念を反映させ、1956年にスクール・オブ・ビジュアル・アーツと改名しました。

Since that time, SVA has grown into a dynamic, multi-disciplinary institution with a faculty of more than 800 and a student body of 3,716 undergraduates, 626 graduate students, and 2,000 continuing education students from nearly every state and 53 countries. The College has consistently engaged a faculty of renowned artists, critics, designers, historians and writers who are active and respected in their fields.

以来、SVA は、800 名を超える教授陣と、ほぼすべての州と 53 カ国から集まった 3,716 名の学部生、626 名の大学院生、2,000 名の生涯教育学生を擁する、ダイナミックで学際的な教育機関に成長しました。当校は、著名な芸術家、批評家、デザイナー、歴史家、作家などの、各分野で活躍し尊敬を集める教授陣を常に擁しています。

SVA has produced more than 180 posters for the New York City subway platforms, in the process creating one of the most enduring public art projects in the City. This is a complete overview of the subway poster campaign, from the earliest posters when SVA was known as Cartoonists and Illustrators School to the most current posters now displayed in subway stations.

SVAがニューヨークの地下鉄ホームのために制作したポスターは180枚以上にのぼります。これは、いつのまにか、ニューヨークで最も長く続いている公共芸術プロジェクトになりました。SVAがカートゥーニスト＆イラストレーターズ・スクールとして知られていた頃の初期のポスターから、現在地下鉄の駅に掲示されている最新のポスターまで、地下鉄ポスター・キャンペーンの全貌を紹介します。

最初は、ただ生徒募集のポスターですが、1990年を過ぎたあたりから、芸術を学ぶ意味や、芸術の持つ社会的な要素に至るまで、様々な短いメッセージが込められるようになったと感じます。
