クェーカーのインスタントオートミールを食べながら、ニューヨークタイムズのライブラリーウェイの記事の続きを読みます。

But remember, this is New York. Do people routinely break stride to lap up ideas lying at their feet?
Not terribly many. By the scores, even the hundreds, they walk on by -- heads up, chins out, eyes ahead.
"You know New Yorkers," said Chris Tann, a recruiter of nurses who was taking a smoke break on 41st Street the other day. "They're always in a hurry to get where they have to go."
しかし、思い出して欲しい。ここはニューヨーク。人々は日々足下に横たわっている言葉を踏まないようにまたいで歩いているのだろうか？ほとんどの人はそうしてはいない。
何十人、何百人という人たちが歩いているのだ。頭を上げて、顎を突き出して、前を向いて。ある日、（ライブラリー・ウェイのある）41丁目で休憩時間にタバコをくゆらせていた看護士の採用担当者であるクリス・タンさんが次のように言っていた。「ニューヨーカーはいつも行かなきゃいけないところに急いでるのよね。」

To be honest, Mr. Tann said sheepishly, he had yet to read the plaques, even though he works right there.
NOT everyone is in a rush. "People new to the area, tourists, they'll stop and read," said Jordan Roy, a doorman at the Library Hotel, on 41st Street. Mr. Roy, who has tried his hand at writing, was partial to a Hemingway quotation planted a few feet from where he stood. "All good books are alike," it begins, "in that they are truer than if they had really happened."
タンさんは、決まり悪そうに、目の前にプラークがあるのに、正直なところまだその英語を読んだことがないと言った。急いでいる人はましてやだ。「ここに引っ越してきた人とか、観光客なら立ち止まって読むかもね。」と言ったのは、41丁目のライブラリーホテルのドアマンのロイさんだ。執筆を手がけたことがあるロイさんは、自分がいるところから２，３フィート離れたところにあるヘミングウェイのプラークが好きだという。その始まりはこうだ。「良い本はすべて似ている。本当に起こったとすれば、と仮定するものより真実に近いという点では。」

ライブラリー・ウェイに刻まれた言葉に自分を映して、人それぞれが自分を振り返ることができるのですね。
しかし、忙しいニューヨーカーのほとんどが読まないとはね。ま、予想できたことですけど・・・。MisTyはしっかり読んでますよ。残念ながらニューヨーカーではないので。。。
