サマースクールとサマーキャンプには大きな違いがある。それは何？

教育制度は国によって大きく違います。"school year"学年度を９月始まりにするという、コロナウィルスのために急浮上した政府案は、大きな混乱を招くということで、なくなりました。教育制度を変えるのは、そう簡単にいかないということです。

ニューヨークでは、先日教育局から"Summer School 2020"の日程について発表がありました。

日本でも、「サマースクール」という呼び名で何らかのプログラムを行なっている学校があるでしょうが、教育委員会がカリキュラムとして入れているものではないので、行なっていることは学校によって様々です。「夏季課外」として、学習困難者や、欠席数が足りない生徒のために設定している学校もあります。

ニューヨークの「サマースクール」はどんなことをするのか、まず、ウィキペディアの説明を読んでみましょう。

"Summer School"

In elementary and middle school, these programs are often used for remedial instruction, though some non-academic day camp programs call themselves Summer school.

サマースクールのプログラムは小学校と中学校において、補習を行なうためによく使われる制度です。アカデミックなものではないデイキャンプなどもサマースクールと呼ばれることがあります。

In high school, college or university, students can enroll in classes for credit to be taken into account in their grade point average or their transcript. Generally, this credit is in one of two categories: remediation or advancement. For remediation, the summer school is used to make up credits lost through absence or failure. For advancement, the summer school is used to obtain credit for classes to accelerate progress toward a degree or to lessen the load of courses during the regular school year. Many universities offer short-term summer courses to attract both local and international students, and these programs are often surrounded by social activities.

高校や大学では、参加した学生はこれに出席すると、学年の成績平均点と見なされたり、成績証明の単位として加味されたりします。一般的にこの単位は２種類のものがあります。補習として授業に追いつくためのものと、普段の授業をさらにレベルアップしたものです。補習としては、欠席したり、試験に合格できなかったりして落した単位を補うものです。普段の授業をレベルアップしたものは、学位取得を早める単位を与えたり、普段の授業内容の一部免除を行なったりします。多くの大学は国内外の学生が大学に魅力を感じてくれるよう、短期間のサマーコースを提供為ており、プログラムの内容には社会的活動と関わるものが多数あります。

当時は、ニューヨークの３年生から８年生の間でサマースクールに行かなければならない生徒の数が、10年間で最も低かったと報じていました。

記事の一部を抜粋します。

It will be a short summer vacation for some city kids, who either have to go back to school on Thursday for the summer session or repeat their grade level in the fall.
But for the first time in at least a decade, less than 5 percent of students in grades 3 through 8 are being required to go to summer school.

サマーセッションのために木曜日に学校に行かなければない子供たちや、（学年が上がる）秋にまた同じ学年を繰り返さなければならない子供たちにとっては短い夏休みになるでしょう。
しかしすくなくともここ10年で初めてサマースクールに行かなければならない3年生から８年生の数が５％を切りました。

Only about 40 percent of students in the city passed the state English and math exams last year. But the education department defends the decrease in required summer school attendance, saying thousands of other students will attend voluntary enrichment programs, which the city will provide for free.

去年は、ニューヨークのおよそ40%の生徒しか国語と数学のテストで合格しませんでした。しかし教育局は、今年はサマースクールに参加しなければならない人数を減らすと主張しています。教育局は、参加者以外の何千もの生徒が自発的に市が無料で提供する学力強化プログラムに参加すると言っているのです。

"Summer Camp"

A summer camp or sleepaway camp is a supervised program for children or teenagers conducted during the summer months in some countries. Children and adolescents who attend summer camp are known as campers. Summer school is usually a required academic curriculum for a student to make up work not accomplished during the academic year, whereas summer camps can include academic work, but is not a requirement for graduation.

サマーキャンプ（またはスリープアウェイキャンプ）は、子供や十代の若者のための、監督者がついているプログラムのことです。国内外で夏の時期に行なわれます。参加者はキャンパーといいます。サマースクールは通常年度内に授業の遅れを取り戻す生徒のためのアカデミックな必修カリキュラムです。一方、サマーキャンプはアカデミックな内容を含むものもありますが卒業単位とは関係がありません。

The traditional view of a summer camp as a woody place with hiking, canoeing, and campfires is changing, with greater acceptance of newer types of summer camps that offer a wide variety of specialized activities. For example, there are camps for the performing arts, music, magic, computer programming, language learning, mathematics, children with special needs, and weight loss.

従来のような、自然の中でのハイキングやヌー、キャンプファイヤーといったサマーキャンプのイメージは変わってきており、何かに特化した様々な活動を行なうものとして、新しい形のサマーキャンプが広く行なわれるようになりました。例えば、アートや音楽、マジック、コンピュータプログラミング、語学学習、数学に特化したものや、特別なニーズのある子供たちや、減量したい子供たちのためのプログラムなどもあります。
