昨日に引き続き、ニューヨークの地下鉄構内のマストランジスコープについてです。
製作者のBill Brand(ビル・ブランド）が登場します。彼は1949年生まれのフィルムアーティストです。

1980 - Masstransiscope — Bill Brand

Masstransiscope is a public artwork that consists of a 300 foot long painting made on reflective material and installed in the tunnel in the NYC subway. It is in a special enclosure with 228 narrow slits on the front side near the train and the painting on the far side. The inside is illuminated by fluorescent lights. You see the work through the slits and the light reflects off the painting and back through the slits. To someone who's passing by, it looks like an animated movie.

マストランジスコープは、反射材で作られた長さ300フィートの絵画を、ニューヨークの地下鉄のトンネル内に設置したパブリックアートです。それは、特殊な箱のような空間で電車に近い側に228個の細いスリットがあり、奥に絵が貼られています。内部は蛍光灯で照らされており、スリットを通して作品を見ると光が絵に反射し、電車の中にいる人たちは、まるでアニメーション映画を見ているような感覚になります。

Bill Brand’s "Masstransiscope" is viewable from the train between the Dekalb subway stop and the Manhattan Bridge, but the model he made to test out his major public art installation was seen in "Art in the Open: Fifty Years of Public Art in New York."

I’m Bill Brand, and here I am. And Masstransiscope 33 years after I first installed it, I've just reinstalled today. And I’m very happy to see it, looking brand new again, and hoping everyone enjoys it like I do.

Masstransisope is a public artwork. It consists of a 300-foot-long painting made reflective material and installed in the tunnel of the subway in New York City in a special enclosure which has on the front side near the train 228 narrow slits. The inside is illuminated by fluorescent lights, and you see the piece through the slits and the light reflects off the painting and back through the slits. And it looks to someone who’s passing by like an animal. So it’s a reversal of normal film process where you sit in the theater and the film passes through the projector. Here the film sits still, you pass by it.

マストランジスコープはパブリックアート作品です。ニューヨークの地下鉄のトンネル内に設置された、長さ300フィートの反射材製の絵画で、正面の電車の近くに228個の細いスリットがある特殊な囲いの中に設置されています。内部は蛍光灯で照らされていて、スリットを通して絵の一部が見えます。光が絵に当たってスリットから戻ってきます。（電車で）前を通る人がスリットを通して作品を見ると、動物のように見えるのです。つまり、人は劇場に座ってフィルムが映写機を通過するという通常の映画のプロセスの逆なのです。ここではフィルムが静止していて、人が動くのです。

Since the 80s, Empty Arts For Transit has commissioned works of art that enhance the transit environment for millions of people. As part of that, we sometimes have to restore works of art for different reasons. Artist Bill Brand and his assistants were able to clean up heavily vandalized artwork, and we were able to reinstall it for everyone to enjoy.

80年代以降、「エンプティーアーツ・フォア・トランジット」（という組織）が、何百万人もの人々の交通環境を向上させるアート作品を委託してきました。その業務の一環として、私達は、さまざまな理由で破損した作品の修復をしなくてはなりません。アーティストのビル・ブランドさんと助手さんたちが、激しく破損した芸術作品をきれいに修復し、再び設置してくださったので、みんながまた楽しめるようになりました。

In 1981 when it was installed, they looked forward to a good reason for being here. Every day you see the rocket ships taking off and the moving images and not realizing that one day down the line I would be assisting in restoring it.

1981年にこれが設置されたとき、どうしたらここに来られるのを楽しみにしていました。毎日ロケット船が離陸し、動くイメージを見ていましたが、いつか自分がその修復を手伝うことになるとは思いもしませんでした。

On August 21,2013, Superintendent Matheson and a Subways team transported the artwork via B train from Kings Highway Station in Brooklyn. The reinstallation took place over several hours under hot, dusty conditions as trains roared by.

2013年8月21日、マセソン教育長とサブウェイチームは、ブルックリンのキングスハイウェイ駅から、Bトレインで作品を運びました。暑くて、そばを列車が轟音と共に通過して埃が立つ中、数時間かけて作品の再設置が行われました。

In doing this restoration, I really put a lot of effort into making it so that it would be easy to restore again if necessary or to give it extra protection. So, I hope it’ll be there for another thirty years, it will continue to be enjoyed by more generations in the New Yorkers and visitors to New York, and people will take responsibility for protecting it and maintaining it over that period of time.

今回の修復では、必要に応じて簡単に修復できるようにしたり、保護を強化したりすることに力を注ぎました。ですから、この作品があと30年は残っていて、ニューヨーク市民や観光客がさらに何世代にもわたって楽しめるようになることを願っていますし、人々が責任を持ってこれから先この作品を守り、維持してくれることを願っています。

MASSTRANSISCOPE can be viewed from the Manhattan bound Q or B trains departing from DeKalb Avenue. When you are facing the front of the train, look to your right. The piece is in two sections, so when the first part finishes, don't look away!
