ニューヨークの地下鉄芸術はどのようにして生み出されているのか？

ニューヨークには美術館がたくさんあり、また芸術家がたくさん活動しています。ワークショップや講演会が数多く開催され、メトロポリタン美術館と専門家、公立学校が協力して毎年開催されるPSアート展については、このブログでも何回かとりあげてきました。

また、音楽家に対してはオーディションを行って音楽を提供する場を与え、世界中から様々なジャンルの優秀な音楽家が地下鉄構内で演奏する権利を得ています。

これらの活動はすべて、ニューヨーク市都市交通局、MTA( The Metropolitan Transportation Authority ニューヨーク州都市交通局)によるものです。

MTA アーツ & デザインは、地下鉄や鉄道の駅にダイナミックな現代アートの設置を依頼し、利用客の記憶に残るような、生き生きとした環境を作り上げています。

Arts & Design builds upon the design mandate dating back to when the New York City subway was first constructed. On opening day in 1904, the founders declared the system a "great public work," for both the access and efficiency it would provide New Yorkers, and for the emphasis on creating an inviting space through beautiful ornamentation, craft, and good design. This emphasis is carried forward in Arts & Design's visual and performing arts programs, and design initiatives that contribute to the cultural vitality of the transit system, a place where millions come together each day.

In conjunction with a massive rehabilitation program launched in the 1980s, MTA Arts & Design was created in 1985 to oversee the selection of artists and installation of permanent artworks in subway and commuter rail stations. Arts & Design creates meaningful connections between stations, neighborhoods, and our diverse ridership through a broad spectrum of artistic activity, including permanent art, graphic art, photography installations, digital art, live musical performances, the Poetry in Motion program, and special events.

1980年代に開始された大規模な改修計画に伴い、1985年に「MTAアーツ＆デザイン」が設立され、アーティストの選定や地下鉄・鉄道の駅への常設アートワークの設置を監督しています。アーツ＆デザインは、幅広い芸術活動を通じて、駅と近隣地域、そして多様な利用者の間に有意義なつながりを生み出しています。その活動内容には、常設アート、グラフィックアート、写真の設置、デジタルアート、音楽ライブパフォーマンス、（詩を紹介する）「ポエトリー・イン・モーション」プログラム、特別イベントなどがあります。

Arts & Design also consults on architectural features within stations and subway cars, and other industrial design elements. Our permanent art program is one of the largest and most diverse collections of site-specific public art in the world, with more than 330 works by world famous, mid-career, and emerging artists.

また、アート＆デザインは、駅や地下鉄の車内の構造的外観や、その他の工業デザイン要素についても専門家の意見を求めています。常設アートプログラムは、その場所に応じたパブリックアートのコレクションとしては世界最大級かつ最も多彩で、世界的に有名なアーティストや中堅、若手アーティストによる330点以上の作品を所蔵しています。

Arts & Design works closely with the architects and engineers at New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad to determine the parameters and sites for the artwork that is incorporated into each station or facility. Artists are chosen through a competitive process, with selection panels comprising visual arts professionals and community representatives. Depending on the project, artists may be considered through an open call or an invitational process. Arts & Design managers research artists' slide registries and constantly conduct research to identify artists to be considered.

アート＆デザインは、ニューヨーク市交通局、ロングアイランド鉄道、メトロノース鉄道の建築家やエンジニアと緊密に連携し、各駅や施設に組み込むアートワークの条件や場所を決定しています。アーティストの選定は、ビジュアルアートの専門家や地域社会の代表者からなる選考委員会によって行われ、競争的なプロセスで行われます。プロジェクトによっては、公募または招待制で審査されます。アーツ＆デザインのマネージャーは、アーティストのスライドの記録を調査し、常にリサーチを行いながら、候補となるアーティストを探します。
