ニューヨーカーにとって、"home"とは？写真展で考える。

高度成長期にあった日本では、ニコンやキャノンなどのカメラが世界中で使われ、写真家たちは自宅に現像場所を持ち、珠玉の１枚を作るために情熱を傾けていました。その後、デジタルカメラが製造され、日本の小型のデジタルカメラも世界で高い評価を受けました。

現在はスマホに搭載されたカメラ機能の性能があがり、「インスタ映え」という表現も生まれるなど写真が画像となり、「写メ」という言葉も生まれました。そんな中で、写真家によるテーマ性を持った写真展では、テーマに添った写真家の訴えを受け取ることができるでしょう。

A photo exhibition opening this month examines what it means to make a home in New York City. Museum of the City of New York’s New York Now: Home exhibit features the photography and video work of 33 artists who have captured the diverse definition of “home,” be it a physical place, feeling, or chosen community. Opening on March 10, the exhibition is the first installation of an ongoing photography series at the museum.

今月から始まる写真展では、ニューヨークで家を作るとはどういうことなのが検証されています。ニューヨーク市立博物館の「ニューヨーク・ナウ」：ホーム」展では、物理的な場所、感覚、選ばれたコミュニティなど、多様な「ホーム」の定義を捉えた33人のアーティストの写真とビデオ作品を展示します。この企画展は３月10日に始まり、この博物館で開催中の写真シリーズの最初の展示になっています。

“New York City is the world center of photography and has been a source of inspiration for generations of image-makers going back to the advent of the medium itself,” Sarah M. Henry, the chief curator and interim director at MCNY, said.

The exhibition is organized into four separate sections. Home Crosses Borders explores the experience of finding community and making home for immigrant and refugee communities in the city. Home Is Chosen highlights “queer kinship” and the power of a chosen family. Home Is a Haven depicts images that challenge the idea of home as a place of safety and protection. Home Is The Body features photos of artists who use their bodies and portraiture to confront intergenerational trauma.

“One of the things that makes New York Now: Home’s images distinctive is, in large part, the photographers’ gaze,” Thea Quiray Tagle, co-curator of the exhibition, said.

“The image-makers featured in the exhibition are engaged with their subjects, often working collaboratively with them to share their powerful stories. The results are unique and often underexposed perspectives of making home in New York that we may not see via mainstream media or in contemporary art representations.”

The Museum of the City of New York is pleased to announce the first in an ongoing photography exhibition series. Inspired by the Museum’s landmark presentation of the same name in 2000, this series will occur every three years and engage different themes and issues of the contemporary city.

The first installment examines the idea of “Home.” At its most practical, “Home” refers to the literal places we dwell. Yet it can also stand for family, or the communities of which we choose to be a part. This vital and complex concept arises in often surprising ways in our urban context, from highly personal experiences to debates over public policy. This exhibition aims to look at how artists have responded to and interpreted these issues.

第一弾は、「家」という概念を取り上げます。実際には「家」は、文字通り私たちが住む場所を指します。しかし、「家」とは、家族、あるいは私たちが属することを選択したコミュニティを意味することもあります。この重要かつ複雑な概念は、非常に個人的な体験から公共政策をめぐる議論まで、都市の状況においてしばしば驚くべき様相を呈します。この展覧会は、アーティストがこれらの問題にどのように反応し、解釈してきたかを見ることを目的としています。

In recent years, the city has struggled to reckon not only with the ongoing dynamics of economic and racial inequality but also with massive challenges unleashed by the COVID-19 crisis. This exhibition includes photography and video work made over the past several years that creatively documents and interprets this changing cityscape and the disparate responses and experiences of New Yorkers, straddling the stories of the city before, during, and after the pandemic.

近年、都市は経済的、人種的不平等の継続的なダイナミクスだけでなく、コロナ危機によって解き放たれた巨大な課題の解決に苦慮しています。本展では、パンデミック前、中、後の街の物語にまたがって、変化する街の風景とニューヨーカーの様々な反応や経験を創造的に記録し解釈している、過去数年間に制作された写真とビデオ作品を展示しています。

The selected work encompasses a variety of perspectives—as diverse as the city itself—and consider a range of picture making approaches. From the personal and intimate to the monumental and collective, the photographs in this exhibition invites viewers to see the city they thought they knew through fresh perspectives.

選ばれた作品は、都市そのものと同じように多様な視点を持ち、さまざまな作品作りまでの過程を考えています。個人的で親しみのあるものから、記念となるような集団的なものまで、本展の写真は、ご来館くださった皆様に、新たな視点を通して、これまでご自身が知っていた街を観ていただきたいと思っているものです。
