今回の大統領選挙で感じたことは、アメリカでは、「投票権」という権利について、子供のころから、その権利を得ることがどんなに大変な道のりだったかということを教えていることです。その歴史を教えれば、「選挙」が民主主義を支える大きな柱なのだということが子供たち分かる、ということです。

教育は社会で生きていくための知識やスキルを教え、学ぶ機会を与えることなのだ、ということです。ですから、学校での英語は、まさに子供たちが社会に出ていくときに必要な、知識やスキルを教えるひとつの方法としての英語を教えるべきなのだ、と思います。「学校で習う英語は全く役に立たない」と言われるのはとても残念なことです。

今日は、子供たちと投票権を考えるニューヨーク市立博物館のワークショップを見たいと思います。

 Learn about how their racial and ethnic identities and class experiences shaped their political views and strategies. Looking back 100 years to the passage of the 19th amendment, students will explore the legacy and shortcomings of the movement for votes for women and learn about the importance of voting rights now.

人種や民族のアイデンティティーと社会的に階級づけされた経験が、どのように彼らの政治の見方と闘い方を形成したのかを学びましょう。100年前の憲法修正事項19条の成立を見て、女性のための投票権運動の遺したものと不十分だった点を探します。そして現在の投票権の大切さを学びます。

This event is free and will take place virtually. Registered participants will receive an email reminder with the Zoom link the day before the event.

Family members and caregivers are welcome to assist students from the same Zoom accounts.

A teacher signing up an entire class will need to indicate the total number of students and adults when registering for the program. The Zoom link and password will be sent to the teacher the day before the event that they should share with their students. The teacher should only share the Zoom link and password with the exact number of students they registered for the program.

クラス全員の参加をご希望の先生は、このプログラムに登録する際に、参加生徒と大人の合計人数をお知らせ下さい。ズームリンクとパスワードを生徒たちと参加するワークショップの前日に先生にお送りします。先生はズームリンクとパスワードをプログラムに参加できる生徒だけにズームリンクとパスワードを伝えて下さい。

コロナ渦だから、これもキャンセル、あれもできない、ではなく、コロナ渦でもこれならできる、こうすればできる、というニューヨーク市博物館の姿勢を感じました。
