STUDENT: Creating art helps me escape from reality and go into my imagination. Now, in my
senior year, I’m taking three art classes. I’m improving my art skills and at the same time
expressing myself.

生徒：絵を描いていると現実から抜け出して、自分の想像の中に入ることができます。今、僕は高校３年で、芸術の授業を３つ受けています。自分の絵画作製技術を向上させ、同時に自分自身を表現しています。

My art teacher has always pushed me to do my best and never allowed me to do something
below my skill level. She also was supportive, and I could trust her and ask her for advice. I’m very appreciative of her guidance throughout my four years in her classes.

僕の先生はいつも最善をつくすよう励まし、自分の技術レベル以下のことをしてはいけないと言われました。また僕を応援して下さり、先生を信じてアドバイスをお願いしました。４年間先生の授業を受けることができて本当に良かったと思っています。

A challenge I faced was shading or adding value with white charcoal. I met this challenge by using a tonal shading technique. It helped me create texture to my hoodie to make it look like clothing material. Whenever I create a portrait or a self-portrait, I have difficulties with the face. I looked very closely at the features of my face, drew a sketch, and then made a grid on my face. This helped me get everything in proportion and made it look like me.

僕が難しいと思ったのは、影をつけること、つまり白の木炭を使って効果を出すことでした。色調で影を作るテクニックを使うのが難しかったです。そのテクニックを使うとパーカーの質感の布らしい感じを出すことができました。僕は肖像画や自画像を描くときはいつも顔に苦労します。自分の顔の特徴をじっと見て、スケッチしてそれから顔のスケッチの上にグリッドを引きます。こうするとすべての均整がとれて自分に似てきました。

TEACHER: For seniors, portfolios should include a variety of media that address a particular concept, while highlighting personal artistic styles. Students in my advanced studio class explored the work of artists such as Jean Michel-Basquiat, Jordan Casteel, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Alice Neel with a focus on their individual personal styles. Using this exploration of artistic work, students created self-portraits using their choice of media. Jhon has emerged artistically with a dynamic focus, and creates highly detailed pieces. I appreciate the way he used a variety of media to capture such beautiful tones and textures.

先生：高校三年生にとって、作品には特別なコンセプトに対応する多様な手法が入ってきて、自分のアーティスティックなスタイルを浮き立たせます。私の上級クラスの生徒たちは個性的なスタイルにフォーカスした、ジーン・マイケル・バスクィアット、ジョーダン・カスティール、ニイデカ・アクニュリ・クロスビー、アリス・ニールのようなアーティストの作品の個人個人のスタイルを研究しました。このアーティスティックな作品を研究することで、生徒たちは手法を選択して自画像を作製しました。ダイナミックにフォーカスした芸術的なジョンが生まれて、かなり細かいところまで描いてあります。彼がこのような美しい色調と質感を掴むために、様々な手法を使ったことは素晴らしいと思います。

影を付けるのに、黒を使わないで、白を使うという手法に気付いたのですね！こうした発見が次の作品の成功へと彼をみちびくのでしょう。

P.S. Art 2020, the annual citywide exhibition of student artwork, has arrived! Each year, Studio in a School NYC, the NYC Department of Education, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art join in presenting this celebration of the creativity and talent of young artists from all five boroughs. Delayed by the impact of COVID-19 on our city, the 2020 exhibition is now on view at The Met’s Uris Education Center, from October 8, 2020 to February 14, 2021.

ニューヨークシティの恒例の生徒の芸術作品展、"P.S.Art 2020"がついにやって来ました！毎年、「スタジオ・イン・ア・スクールＮＹＣと、ニューヨーク教育局、そしてメトロポリタン美術館が共催してニューヨークシティの５つの地区の若いアーティストの創造性と才能の祭典を催しています。2020年の作品展は、街を襲った新型コロナウィルス感染の影響で開催が遅れましたが、2020年10月８日から2021年２月14日まで開催されています。

Studio in a School NYC is proud to have produced the P.S. Art 2020 online exhibition catalogue which beautifully showcases the voices and visions of New York City’s children and teens. The catalogue is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of art teachers across the five boroughs, whose commitment powerfully nurtures the creativity of our city’s youth.
