My message to future volunteers 
これからボランティアをする方たちへ

So, I'm raising a future volunteer. She's three now, but we already do things for our neighbors. And I think the most important thing is to start them young, explain to them why it's important to be kind and to be empathetic, and to help people, explain, you know, not just what it is but what you get out of it.
 And your sense of self and knowing that you're a kind person and that you know how to help people. I think it's huge. 

だから、私は将来のボランティアを育てています。彼女は今３歳ですが、すでに、私たちは近くにいる人のためになることをしています。私は最も大切なことは、若いうちに始めさせて、彼らに人に優しくしたり、共感したり、人の助けになることをするということがなぜ大切なのかを説明してやることだと思います。ただボランティアとは何なのかを説明するのではなく、そこから何を学ぶことができるのかということを説明することです。そして自己意識、つまり自分は親切な人間なんだ、自分は人を助ける方法を知っているんだという意識を持つこと、それはとても大きなことなのです。 

I'm four years old and I volunteer, so can you. 

４歳でボランティアやってるんだから、あなただってできるわ。

The future is bright because of the many talented and wonderful young people in the community today.

未来は明るいですよ。だって今、多くの才能ある素晴らしい若者たちがここにいるんですから。

So, it's not even just the future is bright, today is bright. They provide the bright spots. The young people are stepping forward and saying "Nope,that's not how we want it, we are going to make this better, we're going to make this different," and they are showing up to make that happen and using their voices, their talents and their time.

未来が明るいから明るいだけではなくて、今も明るいのです。若い人たちが明るい場所を作っているから明るいのです。彼らは前に踏み出して、自分たちが「違う、自分たちがやりたいことはそうじゃなくてもっといいやり方がある。自分たちは今を変えたいんだ。」と言って、それを実現しようとしてくれる。そして自分の声、才能、時間を使っているのです。

共通の目的で一緒に働くことで、新しい友達関係を作ることができます。よくある一つのことから始め、誰かの生活に良い変化をもたらすのです。

May I ask why you're volunteering today?

今日どうしてボランティアをしていらっしゃるのですか？

I'm volunteering because I believe in people, I believe in love, I believe in justice for all people, I believe in equality for old people. And I get emotional about that, because this is such a world full of faith. And it's not the world we need to bring each other together. 
I don't care what color, class, creed, or race we are. 

人を信じているし、愛を信じているし、みんなにとっての正義や、高齢者のための公平性を信じているからです。じっとしていられないのです、信頼にあふれている世界だから。あらためて絆を作ろうとする必要などないのです。肌の色や階級や信条、人種は関係ありません。

ボランティアをやれば、より強くなれる！ 

When you take a step back from the free programs and services that Volunteer New York offers, you start to see everything they're doing. There's a pattern to it and it's about more than volunteer work.

ボランティア・ニューヨークがやっている無料のプログラムやサービスを客観的にみると、彼らがやっていることの全てが分かってきます。そこにひとつのパターンがあるのです。それは、ボランティア活動以上のものなのです。

It's about bringing people together and giving everyone a role to play in their community and being there to encourage you, every step of your life. So just try to be the person.

ボランティアは、お互いの絆を作り、そしてみんなそれぞれにその地域で果たすべき役割を与え、そして人や人の生活のどの部分でも勇気を与えるということです。だから、そういう人になってください。
