Mayor Adams, Gov. Hochul declare monkeypox city and state health emergency, vow actions to curb outbreak

New York City is the epicenter of the monkeypox outbreak, Mayor Adams and his health commissioner said Saturday as they declared the disease a citywide health emergency.

“We estimate that approximately 150,000 New Yorkers may currently be at risk for monkeypox exposure,” Adams and Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said in a joint statement.

The declaration also allows the Health Department to issue emergency orders and take other measures to slow the spread of monkeypox, the statement said.

As of Friday, officials counted 1,289 monkeypox cases in New York City. They made up the bulk of the 1,345 cases reported statewide on Friday.

The city’s announcement Saturday followed Gov. Hochul’s declaration Friday of a statewide monkeypox emergency, which officials said would allow the state to secure additional vaccines.

“We need to utilize every tool in our arsenal as we respond,” Hochul said Friday night. “It’s especially important to recognize the ways in which this outbreak is currently having a disproportionate impact on certain at-risk groups.”

According to the governor, her executive order will allow the state to amp up its response to the monkeypox cases while allowing health care professionals to vaccinate more New Yorkers against infection with less red tape.

Hochul’s announcement came after a coalition of Manhattan lawmakers called on Hochul to declare a state of emergency as the number of monkeypox infections continues to rise.

City health officials say the number of cases is growing, and that they believe the official tally of 1,289 cases does not reflect many undiagnosed cases across the five boroughs.

“The current cases are primarily spreading through sex and other intimate contact among social networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; transgender people; gender-nonconforming people, and nonbinary people” said the city Health Department on its website.

California, with 799 cases, is second to New York as the number of U.S. virus infections grew to 5,189.

According to Hochul, the state has now received a total of 170,000 doses of the vaccine after the federal government recently secured more than 110,000 additional doses.

“My team and I are working around the clock to secure more vaccines, expand testing capacity and responsibly educate the public on how to stay safe during this outbreak,” the governor said.
