日本で見る花や木はニューヨークでも見られますが、大きさが違ったり、仕立て方が違ったり、植えられている場所が違ったりするので、全く違う花のように見えることがあります。

マディソン・スクェア・パークは、「樹木園」として認定されており、そのコレクションの多さは世界的なものです。「樹木園」としての認定はとても厳しいもので、かなりしっかりした管理体制が求められます。また、研究対象としての役目もあります。ニューヨークという大都会の真ん中にこのような樹木園があると言うこと自体、あまり知られていません。

Witch Hazel Collection
マンサクコレクション

The witch hazel collection in Madison Square Park consists of over 70 varieties. Between November and March, when most of the park’s plants are dormant, the witch hazel’s vivid blooms emerge to complement the fall and winter scenery. The plant’s fragrant blooms are typically yellow or red, but our collection boasts rare purple and pink varieties as well. 

マディソン・スクェア・パークのマンサクは70種類以上あります。公園の植物が休眠中の11月から3月にかけて、マンサクの鮮やかな花が秋と冬の景色を引き立てます。香りのよいマンサクの花は通常黄色か赤ですが、ここには珍しい紫やピンクの品種もあります。

The species is a small understory tree bearing spider-like flowers. It generally grows to the size of a shrub or small tree, with arching branches reaching heights of 20 to 30 feet. Among the many types of witch hazel, one, Hamamelis virginiana, is traditionally used to make teas and ointments. Madison Square Park has an extensive collection of witch hazels recognized as a Nationally Accredited Collection through the Plant Collections Network.

この種は、クモのような花を咲かせる小さな下層木です。一般に低木か中木に成長し、アーチ状の枝は高さ20～30フィート（６～９m)になります。多くの種類があるマンサクの中でも、ハマメリス・バージニアナ（Hamamelis virginiana）は伝統的にお茶や軟膏の原料として使われてきました。マディソン・スクェア・パークには、植物コレクション・ネットワークを通じて全米認定コレクションに認定されたマンサクの豊富なコレクションがあります。

Camellia Collection
サザンカコレクション

Camellia’s show stopping pink and white flowers are a burst of bright color amidst Madison Square Park’s fall foliage. While camellias typically bloom from October through May, ours are fall bloomers, as the New York City winters are too harsh for the plants’ flowers. 

マディソンスクエア・パークの紅葉の中、サザンカの人目を引くピンクと白の花は鮮やかな色彩を放ちます。ツバキ属の花は通常10月から5月にかけて咲きますが、ニューヨークの冬は植物の花には厳しすぎるため、この公園では秋に花を咲かせます。

In fact, the park’s coastal location and mild climate make it one of the northernmost collections of camellia in the United States. Even in winter, however, the camellias’ evergreen leaves provide the park with a welcome splash of green. Long before they reached the shores of America, camellias had been cultivated in the gardens of China and Japan for centuries.

実際、この公園は海に近い位置あり、気候も温暖なため、ツバキ属のコレクションとしてはアメリカ最北端のひとつとなっています。しかし、冬でもツバキ属の常緑樹の葉は、公園に緑の彩りを添えてくれます。ツバキがアメリカの海岸に到達するはるか以前から、ツバキは何世紀にもわたって中国や日本の庭園で栽培されていました。

Daffodils are the official flower of New York City and 43 varieties of this beloved flower call Madison Square Park home. An array of white, green, and pink daffodils can be found blooming in our gardens from February through April. 

水仙はニューヨーク市の公式の花であり、マディソン・スクェア・パークには43品種が植えられています。マディソン・スクェア・パークでは、2月から4月にかけて、たくさんの白、緑、ピンクのスイセンが咲き誇ります。

Our daffodil collection was first planted as part of the Daffodil Project, a city-wide remembrance program to honor the victims of September 11—and the origin of their status as the city’s official flower. The species is native to the meadows and forests of southern Europe and North Africa. They are often the first wild flowers to appear in the spring and are used in festivals around the world to celebrate the end of winter.

私たちの水仙コレクションは、9・11の犠牲者を追悼し、市の公式花となりました。市を挙げての追悼プログラム「水仙プロジェクト」の一環として植えられたのが始まりです。水仙は南ヨーロッパと北アフリカの牧草地や森林が原産。春に最初に咲く野の花で、冬の終わりを祝う世界中のお祭りによく使われます。

Hydrangea Collection
アジサイ・コレクション

An American garden classic, Madison Square Park’s hydrangeas bloom from June till August. The park features over 350 hydrangea plants on the grounds, creating a vibrant summertime cloud of white, pink, purple, and pale blue flowers. 

アメリカンガーデンの定番、マディソンスクエア・パークのアジサイは6月から8月にかけて咲き誇ります。公園内には350株以上のアジサイが植えられ、夏には白、ピンク、紫、淡いブルーといった鮮やかな花の大群を作ります。

The hydrangea's woody stems and spherical flower shape inspired public garden designer Linden Miller to plant the perennial in Madison Square Park in 2002. Of the more than 75 varieties of hydrangea native to various countries around the world, most are cultivated as shrubs, but there are also several varieties that grow as vines and trees.

アジサイの木質化した茎と球形の花の形にひらめき得て、公共庭園のデザイナーであるリンデン・ミラーが2002年にマディソン・スクエア・パークにこの多年草を植えました。世界各国に自生する75種以上のほとんどが低木ですが、つる性植物や樹木として生育する品種もいくつかあります。

最近は、園芸種のアジサイの種類が増えたように思います。切り花にしてもお部屋が明るくなりますね。

しかし、つる性のものがあるとは知りませんでした。
