パブリック・ガーデンは、「公園」ではない？マディソン・スクェア・パークが他の公園と違うところ。

フラットアイアン・ビル界隈にある、Madison Square Park (マディソン・スクェア・パーク）は、「パブリック・ガーデン」であると同時に「樹木園」でもあります。

パブリック・ガーデンにそのまま漢字を当てはめると「公園」になりますが、マディソン・スクェア・パークが他の公園と違うところは、"Public Garden"であり、"Arboretum”(アーボリータム---樹木園）であるというところです。

What is a Public Garden?
「パブリック・ガーデン（公共庭園）」とは何か？

A public garden is defined by the American Public Gardens Association as:

“An institution that maintains collections of plants for the purposes of public education and enjoyment, in addition to research, conservation, and higher learning. It must be open to the public and the garden’s resources and accommodations must be made to all visitors. Public gardens are staffed by professionals trained in their given areas of expertise and maintain active plant records systems.”

パブリック・ガーデンは、アメリカン・パブリック・ガーデン・アソシエーションによって次のように定義されています。

「研究、保全、高等教育に加え、公衆の教育とレクリエーションのために植物のコレクションを維持する機関である。一般に公開され、庭園の諸施設と空間はすべての訪問者のために設けられなければならない。公共庭園には、与えられた専門分野の訓練を受けた専門家が配置され、活発な植物記録システムを維持している。」

Madison Square Park is an American Public Garden. Where our public garden ends, the concrete jungle begins, and many local residents liken our park to their own backyard. For this reason, we tailor our gardens to accommodate those in search of respite from the urban chaos that surrounds us. We selectively curate our plants with the intention of creating a space that inspires reflection and creativity, while being mindful of how the urban environment shapes us and gives our public garden a special character.

マディソン・スクェア・パークは、アメリカのパブリック・ガーデンです。このパブリック・ガーデンの向こうには、コンクリートジャングルが広がっており、多くの地域住民がこの公園を自分の裏庭のように感じています。ですから、私たちは都会の雑踏から逃れて一息つきたいと願う人たちのいばしょとなるようにこの庭を作っています。そして、私たちは、都市環境が私たちをどのように形成し、このパブリック・ガーデンに特別な個性を与えているかを意識しながら、熟考し創造性を生み出す空間を創造することを頭に置いて植物を厳選しています。

Madison Square Park is Awarded Level 1 Arboretum Accreditation
マディソン・スクェア・パークはレベル1の植物園として認定されている

In January 2018 Madison Square Park was awarded Level 1 accreditation by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. This program approves Madison Square Park as an internationally-recognized arboretum, or tree museum.

2018年、１月、マディソン・スクェア・パークは、「アーブネット・樹木園協会評価プログラム」によって、レベル１認定を受けました。このプログラムによって、マディソン・スクェア・パークは、国際的に認められた樹木園、つまり木の博物館として、認められたことになります。

Madison Square Park’s arboretum consists of 322 trees, two of which are historic English elms that pre-date the Park’s construction in 1850. The Park also has a notable number of surviving American elms and a redbud collection consisting of 32 specimens. 30 trees are marked throughout the Park, allowing visitors to take self-guided tours.

マディソン・スクェア・パークの樹木園には、322本の木があります。そのうちの２本は歴史的なイングリッシュ・エルム（ニレの木）です。この公園が造られた1850年より前からあるのです。また、ハナズオウは32種類あり、（そのうちの）30種類が公園中で見られ、散策しに訪れる人たちはそれらを見て回ることができます。

Tree conservation plan

The Conservancy has also completed a 60-year Tree Conservation Plan which outlines the history of Madison Square Park’s trees and lays out a comprehensive plan for planting future trees. Major goals of the plan include:

保護協会は60年に渡る樹木の保護計画を完成させました。その中で、マディソン・スクェア・パークの木の歴史をの概要を述べ、今後の総合的植樹計画を立てました。その計画の目標が次のようなものです。

● Diversifying tree species
樹木の種（しゅ）の多様化

● Maintaining a mixed forest of mature and immature trees
古い木と新しい木が混在するよう維持していく

● Choosing species that provide habitat for wildlife
野生生物に生息環境を与えるような種を選ぶ

● Increasing seasonal interest for visitors, including spring blossoms and a variation in the color of fall foliage
春のお花見や紅葉狩りのような季節感を盛り込んだ楽しみを増やす

● Restoring species that were prominent in Madison Square Park’s original design
マディソン・スクェア・パークのオリジナル・デザインで多かった樹種を保存する

マディソンスクェア・パークに行くと、まずその静けさに驚きます。マンハッタンの雑踏をすべて飲み込んでくれて、訪れる人に心の平穏をもたらしてくれます。訪れる人だれもが楽しめるという目的は、子供のための遊具やドッグラン、芸術作品の展示に現われています。

公園やドッグランは、静かに時を過ごしたい人のために道路側に柵を設けて配置されており、大人や子供、そして犬の飼い主に対する配慮を感じます。

映画の中にもよく登場する公園ですから、そういった観点からも大いにたのしむことができます。ベンチにあるひとことメッセージにも心が癒やされます。
