The streets may not be paved with gold, as earlier generations of immigrants were led to believe, but some are paved with art, literature and history.

Granite plaques, for example, are embedded in the sidewalks of Lower Broadway to commemorate ticker-tape parades held there over the decades. Along a stretch of Broadway in the garment district, from 39th to 41st Street, sidewalk plaques honor fashion designers like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Geoffrey Beene.

Gregg LeFevre, a Greenwich Village sculptor, has been responsible in the last few years for more than his share of pavement art. His bronze panels outside 101 Park Avenue, at East 40th Street, show the great skyscrapers in that part of town. Other panels he made ring the southern end of Union Square and depict that area's history.

An ambitious LeFevre project lines East 41st Street between Fifth and Park Avenues. Library Way, that slice of pavement, has been designated at the request of its sponsors, the public library and the Grand Central Partnership. Bronze plaques sculptured by Mr. LeFevre -- 96 of them -- bear quotations from famous writers: Mark Twain, Langston Hughes, Albert Camus, Dylan Thomas, José Martí, to name a few. Artwork illustrates their words.
