現在、コロナウィルス感染の影響で、一時的に閉館しているニューヨーク市博物館（Museum Of The City Of New York)です。

ロゴになっている英語、"MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK"を見ると、「ニューヨークという都市についての博物館」であると分かります。

ニューヨーク市博物館に展示されている、アクティビスト・ニューヨークの英語を読む。

この博物館には、多くの生徒がいわゆる校外学習で訪れます。ニュヨークの音楽の歴史を見ていたとき、たまたま小学生（多分小学２年生くらい）の団体に出くわしました。

先生は、生徒たちにワークシートを渡して、展示を観察させた後、後で皆を集めて「何がニューヨークをクリェィティブにしていると思いますか？---What do you think makes New York creative?と質問しました。

生徒たちは、勢いよく手を上げて意見を述べ、先生は正解か不正解かを言うのではなく、その生徒の発言を分かりやすくまとめて他の生徒に伝えています。

生徒たちが、"creative"という意味をきちんと理解できていること、自分の意見を堂々と（もちろん英語で、しかも結構長く(^_^)）発表している姿に、焦りさえ感じました。

そのニューヨーク市博物館で、去年の４月28日まで"Germ City"（細菌都市）というテーマの展示を行なっていました。
その時は、まさか１年後、ニューヨークがウィルスの襲来を受けているとは考えもしませんでした。
そこで、今、改めてこの展示を振り返ってみようと思います。

細菌都市
微生物と巨大都市

Germs are part of everyone’s life. They are the reason you button up your overcoat, wash your hands, cover your mouth when you sneeze, and take care when you get close to others.
細菌はみんなの生活の一部です。細菌がいるから人はコートのボタンをはめるし、手を洗うし、くしゃみするときは口を覆い、他の人に近づくときは気を付けているのです。 

But the bacteria and viruses that inhabit and sometimes infect our bodies are also a major, if microscopic, feature of our urban environment. Indeed, the history of New York has been plagued, quite literally, by a variety of contagious diseases. Among them was the 1918 flu pandemic that killed tens of millions worldwide a century ago this year.
しかし、私たちの周りにあって、時には体に伝染するバクテリアやウィルスは、たとえそれらが顕微鏡でしか見られないような小さなものであっても、我々の都市環境の多くの部分を作っているものでもあるのです。実にニューヨークの歴史は、文字通り様々な伝染病に苦しめられてきました。その中には、1918年のインフルエンザの大流行があり、世界中で何千万人という人たちが亡くなりました。その時から今年で、１世紀が経ちました。

When tiny germs interact with a massive metropolis like New York City, no aspect of life
goes untouched. Germ City: Microbes and the Metropolis tells stories about health and illness, immune systems and antibiotics, breakthroughs in treatments and vaccinations, and the lives and struggles of ordinary New Yorkers. But it is equally about structure of urban life: housing, water systems, sanitation, individual and collective rights, and public
policy at every level. And, because responses to disease so closely reflect the dynamic of their times, the history of contagion inevitably shines a light on social injustices and conflicts as they played out over the generations.
ニューヨークのような巨大都市に細菌が入り込んでくると、生活のあらゆる面で影響が出ます。企画展、「細菌都市、細菌と巨大都市」では、健康と病気、免疫システムと抗生物質、治療とワクチンの画期的な発達、そしてニューヨーカーの生活と格闘のストーリーをお伝えします。しかし、同時に都市生活の構造についてのストーリーでもあります。つまり、住宅事情、水道、衛生、個人と集団の権利、あらゆるレベルでの大衆政策のストーリーなのです。そして、病気への対応は時代を大きく反映しているため、伝染病の歴史は、何世代にもわたって繰り広げられてきた、社会の不正と争いを明るみに出すことになりました。

Germ have shaped our city’s past, and they are more relevant than ever in the 21st century.  Across the planet, migration, urbanization, and a changing climate are affecting
the spread of disease and spurring anxieties about those who may be carrying them.
Germ City tackles these issues by weaving together history, science, art, and the stories of everyday people. We invite you to explore these intertwined narratives and discover the surprising and complex interplay between people and germs on urban context.
細菌は我々の都市の過去を形作り、21世紀にはさらに今日の問題に直結しています。地球上で、人間の移動、都市化、気候変動は、病の拡散に影響を与えており、それを運んでいるかもしれない人々に対する不安に拍車をかけています。
「細菌都市」は、歴史、科学、芸術、日常生活の中の人間のストーリーを織り込むことで、これらの問題に取り組みます。我々は皆様を複雑に絡み合ったストーリーの中へと招待し、都市という状況の中での人間と細菌の驚くべき、そして複雑な相互関係を探っていただきたいと思います。

Germ City is part of Contagious Cities, and international cultural project that supports local conversations around the global challenges of epidemic preparedness. Developed by Wellcome, the project is being staged across three global cities ―New York, Geneva, and Hong Kong. Combining different perspectives and expertise, partners in the project are co-producing exhibitions, interactive experiences, artist residencies, events, broadcasts, and more.
「細菌都市」の展示は「伝染都市」の一環であり、疫病予防の世界的な取り組みの中で、地域における対話を支援する国際文化企画です。ウェルカムトラスト（という、医学研究支援等を目的とする公益信託団体）によって展開されており、その企画は３つの国際都市（ニューヨーク、ジェノバ、香港）で繰り広げられています。異なる観点と専門知識を合体させて、このプロジェクトの連携により、協力展示、知識の交流、芸術家の招へい、イベント開催、報道など様々なことが可能になりました。

明日から、この"Germ City"の一部をご紹介します。
しかし、ここまでやっていたのに、なぜコロナウィルスの拡散が止められないのか・・・？これも、歴史の大きな流れの一つとして刻まれるかもしれません。。
