昨日のスペクトラム・ニュースの記事の中で、老舗書店STRANDのオーナー、ナンシー・バス・ワイデンさんからの手紙が公表されていましたので読みます。

To The Strand's family and friends,

The Strand's mission has always been simple: to get good books in the hands of readers. For over 93 years, the bookstore my grandfather founded has become so much more than just a bookstore --- The Strand has become a community center, welcoming all book lovers with open arms.
ストランドの使命はずっとただこれだけでした。読者の手に良い本を届けること。93年以上の間、私の祖父が始めたこの本屋はただの本屋以上のものになりました。ーーストランドは、全ての本愛好家を温かく迎えるコミュニティーセンターになったのです。

In order to preserve The Strand as a business, with no revenue coming in and no clear idea as to when we can reopen our doors, we have had to temporarily lay off the majority of our staff. Due to the rapid spread of CPVOD -19, we made the decision to close our doors a week before the government mandate, as we felt it was unsafe for our staff and community for us to keep operating.
収益はなく、いつまた扉を開けることができるのかはっきりしない状況にあって、ストランドを運営し続けるために、我々は、多くのスタッフを一時的に解雇しなければなりませんでした。急激に広がるコロナウィルスのため、政府命令が出る１週間前に我々は休業を決めました。営業を続けることはスタッフとコミュニティーにとって安全ではないと感じたからです。

This is the first time in our history that we have had to have a layoff. All of our staff have been paid for the week and we are paying out any vacation or time due. We are also working with our union and our providers to extend health insurance as long as possible. We know that it is our booksellers that make The Strand so beloved, so our goal is to get through this so we can rehire every employee as soon as possible.
一時的解雇をしなければならないというのは我々の歴史上今回が初めてのことです。スタッフ全員にはその週の賃金の支払いを致しました。そして、有給休暇分の支払いもしています。われわれはまた、健康保険ができるだけ延長してもらえるように組合やプロバイダーと共に働きかけています。ストランドをとても愛される存在にしているのは、本を販売している人たちだと思っています。ですから我々の目標は、この困難を乗り越えて再び全ての従業員をできるだけ早く再雇用することです。

The Strand has survived catastrophes, from the Great Depression to 9/11, and weathered the schisms in the book industry that many predicted would put us out of business. After a century of beating the odds, we won't give up now. We have filed a request to the Governor's office to be designated as essential business in order to restore our ability to process online and phone orders as soon as possible. We strongly believe that our 18 miles of books are a vital resource that world could really use right now.
ストランドは大恐慌から9/11まで様々な大きな困難を生き抜いてきました。やっていけなくなるだろうと多くの人が予想した書店業界で、壊滅の危機を乗り切ってきました。逆境の１世紀を生き抜いた後で、今あきらめるわけには行けません。我々は知事にオンライン販売や電話注文で復活できるよう、できるだけ早くエッセンシャルビジネスの指定をしてもらえるよう要請しました。我々は18マイルの本（ストランドの愛称）がこんな時だからこそ世界が本当に使うことができる大切な資源なのだと強く信じております。
