Manhattan has been home to countless neighborhoods that no one wanted to stroll through.

マンハッタンは、誰も歩きたがらない界隈が無数にあるところです。

A peculiar and uncanny trail of cement along Doyers Street, was known as "Murder Alley" — a playground of corruption and violence.

ドイヤーズ・ストリート沿いのセメントでできた奇妙で不気味な道は、「殺人横丁」と呼ばれ、腐敗と暴力のプレイグラウンドでした。

The winding path, also known as "Bloody Angle," weaved its way through Chinatown south and southeast from Pell Street to the intersection of Bowery, Chatham Square and Division Street. It was really a hidden curve that naturally attracted alot of secret "hobbies."

その曲がりくねった道は、「ブラッディ・アングル」ともよばれ、ペル・ストリートからバワリー、チャタム・スクエア、ディビジョン・ストリートの３本の交差点まで、チャイナタウンを南へ、さらに南東へ縫うように延びていました。まさに秘密の「趣味」が集まるような隠れたカーブのある道でした。

The mysterious paveway got its name from 18th century Dutch immigrant Hendrik Doyer, who managed a distillery at 6 Doyers St. Today, a post office is now in place of the former brewhouse.

そのミステリアスな鋪道は、18世紀にオランダから移民してきたヘンドリック・ドイヤーが、ドイヤーズ・ストリート６番地で蒸留所を経営していたことから、その名が付けられました。

According to BoweryBoyHistory.com as part of their "What Remains" series, hidden within the streets were secret gambling dens, opium dens and even prostitution caves.

バワリー・ボーイ・ヒストリー・ドットコムの「ホワット・リメインズ」シリーズによると、通りには秘密の賭博場、アヘンの巣窟、さらには売春の巣窟が隠され存在していたといいます。

One of the first Chinatown brothels was located in an upstairs barren building on 11 Mott St., which today is just a boutique for tourists and locals to browse around and shop.

The Tongs, On Leon Tong and the Hip Sing Tong, were two of Chinatown's notorious rival gangs that were known to cause strife.

The hostile Tong wars would last for decades in the 19th century.

In 1904, a widespread gunfight took place in front of Hip Sing headquarters on the Bowery.

Cops unveiled at the scene a "major arsenal, including four coats of armor, one made of human hair. Another was constructed with enough steel to weigh 75 pounds— while the vest was invulnerable to bullets, it also made outrunning the cops chancy," reported in the Daily News.

These deadly accounts would certainly not be the last to take place in the secluded streets.

On 5 Doyers St., a Chinese theater and operahouse became almost that of a bad movie scene, where shows and dramas took place — as well as homicide.

ドイヤーズ・ストリート５番地にあった中国の劇場と歌劇場は、まるで低俗な映画劇場のようであり、ショーやドラマが行われ、殺人事件も発生しました。

According to Bowery Boys, in 1905, members of the "Hip Sing Tong ambushed members of their rival gang, the On Leon Tong, killing four people and igniting a war that would last almost until 1910."

The phrase "hatchet man" was rumored to get its name from the Tongs, who were known to use hatchet axes to butcher their enemies. Today, the evil-ridden operahouse is a simple clothing store, like many other business sharing a daunting past on Doyers Street.

「ハチェットマン（手斧男）」の語源は、手斧で敵をぶった切ることで知られるトン組にあるという噂があります。現在、この悪にまみれたオペラハウスは、ただの衣料品店になっています。ドイヤーズ・ストリートでみんなが怖じ気づくような同じ過去をもつ、他の多くの店と同じように。

Ting's Gift Shop, which was in business since 1957, was Chinatown's drug den that was raided when 10 pounds of heroin were found, according to the New York Times. Today, Ting's is simply a shop and nothing more.

1957年から営業していたティンズ・ギフト・ショップは、ニューヨークタイムズによると、強制捜査で10ポンドのヘロインが発見されたチャイナタウンの麻薬取引のたまり場だったそうです。現在、ティングズは単なる店であり、それ以上のものではありません。

Host of the Bowery Boys Greg Young, said Doyers Street today is undoutably a "far cry from what it was over a hundred years ago."

バワリー・ボーイズのホスト、グレッグ・ヤングは、現在のドイヤーズ・ストリートは、間違いなく「100年以上前の姿と全く違っている。」と言っています。

The streets are renewed but hints of its hair-raising history will still remain within the walls and streets, as most who pass through are blindly unaware of its dark roots.

通りは新しくなりましたが、通りを通る人のほとんどがその暗いルーツに全く気付いていなくても、その身の毛もよだつ歴史をうかがわせるものは、まだ壁や通りの中に残っていることでしょう。
