ニューハンプシャー州で行われた、共和党のタウンホールミーティングで、15歳のクイン・ミッチェルがデサンテス候補に鋭い質問をしたことが、メディアや動画で話題になりました。

このことを書いたニューヨークタイムズは、世界の10代の若者に次のように問いかけ、コメントを求めました。現在、73のコメントを読むことができます。（こちらからです。）

その中からいくつかご紹介します。
10代の若者に向けた質問でしたが、ほとんどが高校生からのコメントでした。

質問は以下のようなものです。(囲みの部分は昨日のブログにも掲載しています。）

● What question would you like to ask a politician or person in power? What would you hope to learn? How do you think the person might react to your query?

● What’s your reaction to 15-year-old Quinn Mitchell and the pointed questions he has posed to political candidates like Governor DeSantis? What does his story tell you about the power of young people’s voices?

● According to his website, Quinn has attended more than 80 presidential campaign events since he was 10, and he has his own political blog and podcast. Does he inspire you to become more interested in politics or journalism?

The news that I listen to has an impact on me because it inspires change and brings light to issues that either need to be addressed or changed. 

私は自分が聴くニュースに影響を受けています。それはそのニュースが変化を促し、取り組むべき問題や変えるべき問題に光をもたらしてくれるからです。

While it might not seem super important to some right now, preparing for the process of voting and being civically engaged is a critical aspect of our democracy. Being actively engaged in politics and even having the opportunity to talk face-to-face with a politician is a fantastic way to be more engaged and doing this more often will humanize the leaders within our country.

今はあまり重要でないように思えるかもしれませんが、投票に向けての準備をし、市民として関与することは、民主主義の重要な要素です。政治に積極的に関わり、政治家と直接話す機会を持つことは、より関与を深めるための素晴らしい方法です。直接対話をもっと頻繁に行えば、我が国の政治家は人間味のあるものになるでしょう。

My reaction to Quinn stepping up and doing what others fear to do/be makes me feel encouraged. Quinn has done stuff that adults fear to do. Quinn questions are very strategic and will be of help to the future.

クインが一歩踏み出して、他の人たちが恐れていることをやっていることに私は勇気づけられます。クインは大人が恐れていることをやってのけています。クインの質問はとても戦略的で、将来の役に立つでしょう。

I think this story is a great way of showig how much power we truly have. We are the ones who will need to make this effect and stand up for what we want as this is our world to, and one day we will be the people getting asked the questions by people like Quinn.  This story is another great reminder of no matter what age you are, you can always fight for what you think is right.

この記事は私たちがどれほどの力を持っているかが示してくれて素晴らしいと思います。私たちはこの力を有効活用し、私たちが望むもののために立ち上がることが必要です。なぜなら、それはかけがえのないものだからです。将来クインのような（若い）人たちから質問を受けるのは私たちです。この話は、何歳であろうと、自分が正しいと思うことのために戦うことができるということを思い出させてくれる話でもあります。

For me, I would reach to ask something for the people. 

私の場合は、国民のために何かを尋ねたいと思います。

I would want to represent some community I’m apart of, and address a pressing issue. 

自分が属するコミュニティの代表として、差し迫った問題に取り組みたいと思います。

I would start by asking, “Does such a powerful position motivate you, or discipline you to make a decision? 

まず、聞きたいことは、「そのような強力な地位にあることが、あなたにやる気を起こさせるのですか？つまり、決断しなければならないと思わせるのですか？」ということです。

Furthermore, when do you highlight your values?”. This allows the candidate to find where their mind is focused and what the focus is on. True intention, especially in politics, is so rarely expressed. 

さらに、「あなたはどんなときに自分の価値を強調されるのですか？」ということです。この質問で、候補者は自分の心がどこに集中しているのか、何に焦点を当てているのかが分かります。特に政治の世界では、真意が表明されることは非常に稀です。

Beyond that, I want the speaker to be aware of their influence and where it stems from. Having an immense pressure with such a powerful position has to alter the mindset of someone, the question is “How?”.

それ以上に、候補者には自分の影響力と、それがどこから生じるのかを自覚していただきたいです。そのような強力な地位と絶大な力を持つには、誰かの考え方を変えなければなりません。そこで、質問は「どうやって（それをするのか）？」です。

I think everyone at some point in their life has heard the words, "You're too young to understand" or "How about you leave this one to the adults" as if age always equals maturity. As if the concerns and opinions of young people don't matter simply because of when they were born. 

「君はまだ若いからわからない」、とか、「大人に任せたらどうだ」と、年をとることが成熟することであるかのような言葉を、誰もがいつかどこかで耳にしたことがあると思います。若い人たちの関心や意見が、単に彼らが生まれた時期（が若いから）ということで重要でないかのように。

The way I see it previous generations might have lived longer and experienced more of the world, but as a part of the younger generation I think it’s important to recognize that we are the ones growing up in it right now.

私が思うに、古い世代の人たちは私たちより長く生き、より多くの世界を経験してきたかもしれませんが、私たち若者は、今、若い世代の一員として、その中で育っているのだということを認識していただくことが重要だと思います。

My question is simple, do you run to be the change and represent the people, or to please your party and financiers? A question so bold both provides insight into the person's interior motives and shows if they deserve that spot as a representative. The reaction to this question depends on the outcome, those with pure motives and ethics will answer with insight and purpose, and those who do not will dodge the question and try to achieve insight from others around them.

私の質問は単純です。変化をもたらし、国民を代表するために立候補するのですか、それとも政党や資本家を喜ばせるために立候補するのですか？ということです。これほど大胆な質問は、立候補者の内面的な動機が分かると同時に、代表の座にふさわしい人かどうかを示すものです。純粋な動機と倫理観を持つ人は状況への洞察と目的を答えるでしょうし、そうでない人は質問をかわし、周囲の他の候補者の洞察を真似しようとするでしょう。

韓国の高校生からのコメントはありましたが、日本の高校生からのコメントはありませんでした。
先生が授業でこの質問を取り上げられて、先生がまとめて応募されたのだろうと思えるような、同じ高校からのコメントがありました。その高校の生徒たちは、幸運ですね。きっと政治への関心がより深まったと思います。もしかして、政治家ではなくクインのフォロワーになった？
