New York City schools are on track to drop their mask mandate and New Yorkers will no longer have to show proof of COVID vaccination at indoor venues like bars and restaurants as soon as March 7, Mayor Adams said Sunday.

ニューヨーク市の学校は早ければ3月7日にもマスクの義務付けを取りやめ、ニューヨーク市民はバーやレストランなどの屋内でのワクチン接種の証明書を提示する必要がなくなると、アダムス市長は日曜日に発表した。

The announcement from City Hall followed a move by Gov. Hochul to end the statewide mask mandate for schools on Wednesday.

市の発表は、水曜日にホークル州知事が学校に対する州全体のマスク義務を終了させるという動きに続くものであった。

The governor cited steep declines in the state’s COVID numbers — down from alarming heights through the holidays — as the reason behind the milestone in New York’s pandemic response.

知事は、州のコロナ関係の数値が急落したことを理由として挙げた。休暇中に憂慮すべき高さから下がったのである。こうしたことが、ニューヨークのパンデミック対応の節目を迎える理由になっていると述べた。

“Given the decline in our rates, our hospitalization, strong vaccination rates and the CDC guidance — my friends, the day has come,” Hochul said at an Albany press conference.

「陽性率の低下、入院者数の減少、高いワクチン接種率、CDCのガイダンスを考えてこう言います。みなさん、この日が来たのです。」ホークル知事は州庁舎での記者会見でこう述べた。

She added that cities including New York still could make their own decisions about facial coverings for students and educators.

また、ニューヨークを含む各都市では、生徒や教育関係者のフェイスカバリングについて、まだ独自の判断に委ねたいと付け加えた。

After her announcement, Adams said the city would evaluate COVID numbers and make its determination on school masks on Friday.

アダムスニューヨーク市長は、州の発表後、市がコロナ関連の数字を見て、金曜日に学校のマスクについて決定を下すと述べた。

“If we see no unforeseen spikes and our numbers continue to show a low level of risk, New York City will remove the indoor mask mandate for public school children, effective next Monday, March 7,” he said in a statement.

市長は、「予期せぬ急増がなく、数字がリスクの低さを示し続ければ、ニューヨーク市は公立学校の子供たちへの室内マスク義務付けを、事実上来週月曜日、3月7日から解除します。」と声明を出した。

He also said the city would drop its “Key to NYC” mandate requiring proof of vaccination at indoor venues including restaurants, gyms and entertainment spaces on March 7 — as long as “there are no surprises this week.”"

また、レストラン、ジム、娯楽施設など、屋内でワクチン接種の証明を義務付ける「NYCへのカギ」の義務付けを、「今週中に大きな変化がない限り」3月7日に取りやめると述べた。

Mask rules will remain in effect on subways and hospitals. But the changes could undermine the city’s efforts to continue vaccinating people, said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.

地下鉄や病院でのマスクのルールは引き続き有効である。しかし、マンハッタン区長のマーク・レバイン氏は、市の今回の対応はワクチン接種を継続する市の努力を無駄にする恐れがあると述べた。

“I am really concerned that people don’t misinterpret this to mean the pandemic is over,” he told the Daily News.

彼は「これがパンデミックの終焉を意味すると誤解されないか、本当に心配です」とデイリー・ニュースに語っている。

“We have made enormous progress, and I think we’re heading to a wonderful spring, but we’re still seeing close to a thousand cases a day,” he added.

The state is waiting until Wednesday to lift the mandate to allow families and educators returning from last week’s midwinter break to “assess” the new situation, the governor said.

州は、先週冬休みがあけて、戻ってきた家族や教育関係者が新しい状況を「評価」できるように、義務化の解除を水曜日まで待っていると知事は述べた。

欧米に比べてマスクを付けることに抵抗感が少ない日本では、マスクをはずすのはまだ先のことになるかもしれません。入学式はマスクなしで迎えたいですね。。。
