昨日のブログで、パークアヴェニューのストリートアートをとりあげました。
その中で、POPAという団体の存在を知りました。
POPAというのは、

Patrons of Park Avenue
パークアヴェニューのパトロン

の略語です。

日本語で「パトロン」と聞くと、「 芸術家・芸能人・団体などを経済的に支援する人」だけでなく、「 異性への経済的な援助を行い、生活の面倒をみる人」という意味で使われています。（Weblioを参照しました。）

ところが、英語の"patron"の意味は次の３つです。（ロングマンより。）

① someone who supports the activities of an organization, for example by giving money
お金を提供するなど、団体の活動を支援する人

② a famous person who is officially involved with an organization, such as a charity
 慈善活動等を行っている団体に正式にかかわっている有名人

③ someone who uses a particular shop, restaurant, or hotel 
特定の店、レストラン、ホテルを使っている人　（→お得意様、常連客）

日本語の「異性の生活の面倒を見る人」という意味は、どういう経緯でそうなったのか分かりませんが、日本語の「パトロン」とはイメージが随分違いますので、POPAを日本語にするとき、「パトロン」という表現は避けたいと思います。

というわけで、POPA (Patrons of Park Avenue---パークアヴェニューを支援する人たち)をそのまま｢ポパ｣と書きます。

このブログでも、2015年の"Looking Up"というTom Friedmanの作品をご紹介したことがあります。これも POPA の事業の一環でした。

Patrons of Park Avenue | Supporting the Maintenance of the Malls of Park Avenue in New York City

Patrons of Park Avenue “POPA” supports the care, maintenance and planting of the malls of Park Avenue in the Murray Hill neighborhood of New York City.

 "ポパ---POPA "は、ニューヨーク市マレーヒル界隈にあるパークアヴェニューの中央分離帯の手入れ、維持、植栽をサポートしています。

The glorious red tulips, the pink cherry blossoms, the flowering magnolias, the summer begonias, the seasonal Christmas trees with sparkling lights and the Menorah are all due to the planning and work of this busy beautification group, which oversees the Park Avenue Malls from 34th to 39th Street.

華やかな赤のチューリップ、ピンクの桜、モクレンの花、夏のベゴニア、イルミネーションが輝く季節のクリスマスツリー、メノーラ（ユダヤ教の祝祭に使用する燭台）は、34丁目から39丁目までのパークアヴェニューのショッピング街を統括するこの活発な美化グループの企画と活動によるものです。

See below an image from 1908, looking north up Park Avenue from about 38th Street. On the left side between 40th and 41st Street, stands the Murray Hill Hotel with its corner towers, and between 41st and 42nd Street, the Hotel Belmont, at the time considered to be one of the tallest hotels in the world. In the far background is the early Grand Central Station.
 
1908年、38丁目付近からパークアヴェニューを北方向へ見た画像をご覧ください。40丁目と41丁目の間の左側には、コーナータワーのあるマレーヒルホテルが、41丁目と42丁目の間には、当時世界で最も高いホテルの一つとされたホテルベルモントが建っています。奥に見えるのは、初期のグランドセントラル駅です。

South of 32nd Street, the name Fourth Avenue remained despite the planters installed in the 1930’s. In 1959, the City Council voted to extend the cachet of the Park Avenue name down to 17th Street, renaming that section Park Avenue South. All that remains of the old Fourth Avenue is a stretch from East 14th Street to Astor Place.

32丁目より南は、1930年代にプランターが設置されたものの、4番街という名称が残りました。1959年、市議会はパークアヴェニューの名称を17丁目まで延長することを決議し、その区間をパークアヴェニュー・サウスと改名しました。現在、旧４番街は東14丁目からアスタープレイスまでの区間しか残っていません。

The Founding of POPA
POPAの創立

New York City was in a state of decline and despair in the 1970’s, and in the early 1980’s, a group of community leaders and Park Avenue building owners concerned about the deterioration of the iron fences surrounding the malls and the barren garden areas came together to form Patrons of Park Avenue (“POPA”)

1970年代のニューヨークは衰退と絶望に満ちていました。1980年代初頭、中央分離帯を囲む鉄柵の劣化と荒れた公園を懸念したコミュニティリーダーやパークアヴェニューのビルオーナーたちが集まり、パークアヴェニューの後援者（以下、POPA）を結成したのです。

Working together with the New York City Parks Department (malls are the property of NYC Parks Department) and a landscape architect, a plan was developed to restore the iron fences to the original design, dating from 1850 along with an annual seasonal planting & maintenance program.

ニューヨーク市公園局（モールはニューヨーク市公園局の所有物）や造園家との協力のもと、1850年当時の鉄柵を復元し、毎年季節ごとに植栽とメンテナンスを行う計画を立てました。

The Park Avenue malls are also adjacent to numerous historical markers, including John Paul II House, Murray Hill Historic District, The Union League Club, Park Avenue Viaduct, 101 Park Avenue, Memorial Light, and Ptl. Thomas Schimenti, NYPD.

また、パークアヴェニューのショッピング街は、ジョン・ポール2世ハウス、マレーヒル歴史地区、ユニオン・リーグ・クラブ、パークアヴェベニュー高架橋、101パークアヴェニュー、メモリアルライト、ニューヨーク市警のトーマス・シメンティ警部補のメモリアルプレートなど、数多くの歴史的建造物にも隣接しています。

On August 17, 1979, Officer Schimenti was killed near Grand Central Station in a gunfight with a bank robber.
1979年8月17日、シメンティ巡査はグランドセントラル駅付近で銀行強盗との銃撃戦の末に死亡した。
