メトロポリタン美術館で毎年開かれている、"P.S. Art 2022"（HPはこちら）は、ニューヨーク市の公立学校に通う生徒による作品展です。メトロポリタン美術館と、専門家が直接指導する「スタジオ・イン・ア・スクール（Studio in a School）」の協賛を得て、毎年開かれています。

これがニューヨークのメトロポリタン美術館。

昨年の代表作品はこちらでご紹介しています。

今日は今年の代表作品に選ばれた、"The Will of the Lion"（ライオンの意思）は、高校３年生のモーヴェンス・リジズ君によって書かれたものです。

この作品や、自分自身のことを次の動画で語っていますので、聞いてみましょう。

My name is Morvens Regis. I live in Brooklyn and  I'm in the 12th grade
The title of the artwork is called "The Will of the Lion". 
And it depicts my brother and I in our bedroom in Brooklyn.

私は、モーヴェンス・リジズです。ブルックリンに住んでいる12年生です。
この作品のタイトルは、「ライオンの意思」です。
ブルックリンの自分の部屋にいる、私の兄と私を描きました。

We're studying the artist called Caravaggio, and we learned a lot about traditional paintings and his  tenebrism technique which is to use a dramatic lighting and to illminate figures. Something I learned in the art class was to trust the process when you're painting. 

僕たちは（ミケランジェロ・メリージ・ダ・）カラヴァッジオ（Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio）という画家を研究しています。そして伝統的な絵画についてたくさん学び、また、彼の明暗対比画法、つまり力強い光を用いたり、対象を照らしたりする手法を学びました。僕が芸術の授業で学んだことの一つは、描いている時のプロセスを信じることでした。

I want to trust myself more when I start a painting because I tend to judge it too much in the beginning. My inspiration for this painting was to work on a moment with my brother and I. And as a teenager, it is hard to stay focused on work and stuff that matters to us, which is why me and him made a specific day in the week that we would work on things that matter to us. 

描き始めは自分自身をもっと信じたいと思っています。僕は描き始めに考えすぎてしまう傾向があるからです。この絵の主題（としてひらめいたもの）は、兄と私が一緒に勉強している瞬間です。10代の若者として、勉強や僕たちに大切なものに集中し続けるのは難しいことです。だから、僕と兄が１週間の中で、自分たちにとって大切なもの（絵の作成の）ために特定の日を作らなければならなかったのです。

 I enjoy making art because it  releases me of stress and good times I used to have in the past, most specifically times, I used to have with my father. Because he, himself, was also an artist. And we used to make art together when I was a child.  So making art reminds me of these good times I used to have with him.

僕は創作することが好きです。なぜならストレスを取り除いてくれるし、過去の楽しい時間をよみがえらせて売れるからです。なかでも特に父と過ごした楽しい時間がよみがえります。というのは、子供の頃よく一緒に絵を描いていたのです。ですから絵を描くとその楽しかった時のことを思い出すのです。

STUDENT:
Being an artist has taught me discipline, not only as I develop my craft as an artist but also as I work hard to achieve all my goals. As an art major I learned to trust the process, realizing that if I keep creating, I will keep growing. Ms. Hill has been one of the most motivational teachers I have ever had. She has exposed me to a variety of art opportunities. She inspired me to paint and taught me many techniques. She also encouraged me to not give up and to challenge myself. One goal I had in this artwork was to achieve proper proportions while working on a larger canvas. In this painting I am expressing the strength and support between brothers.

アーティストであることとして私に規律を学びました。つまり、アーティストとしての技術を磨くだけでなく、すべての目標を達成するために懸命に努力することを学びました。アートを専攻していた私は、プロセスを信頼することを学び、創作を続ければ成長し続けることができることを実感しました。ヒル先生は、私がこれまで受けた先生の中で最も意欲を与えてくれる先生の一人です。彼女は、私にさまざまな芸術の機会を与えてくれました。先生は私にひらめきを与え、多くのテクニックを教えてくださいました。また、あきらめずに挑戦するよう励ましてくださいました。この作品で私が目指したのは、今までよりも大きなキャンバスに絵の適切な配置を決めることでした。私はこの絵で兄弟の間の強さと絆を表現しました。

TEACHER:
For Portfolio Preparation class, Morvens has been working on developing a body of work that explores a personal theme. He has been using the medium of acrylic paint to create self-portraits and portraits of his family.

作品集準備クラスでモーヴェンスは個人的なテーマを探求する作品群の制作に取り組んできました。アクリル絵の具を使い、自画像や家族の肖像画を制作してきました。
