そのときは、たしか原稿用紙４枚くらい書かなければならなかったように記憶しています。

書くことがなくなって、本の中の文を引用したり、要約を書いてしまったりしていました。今日の動画を見てから思うと、あのときの感想文は随分ひどいものだっただろうなと思います。

「感想文」と「評論」とは違うでしょうが、共通しているところもあります。今日のプロの評論家の意見を聞くと、「今なら、あのときの感想文がもっとうまく書けるかもしれない。」と思えます。

Maya Phillips, a critic at large who reviews theater, poetry and other works of art and culture, stresses that a review is simply a piece of persuasive writing. She urges students who are new to review writing to use their visceral responses to drive their arguments.

I just remember knowing that I wanted to be a journalist and finding out that there were people who wrote about fun things like movies and theater and TV and art and music. And they were able to write about it in a way that had so much personality and so much style. It just felt like something I was already doing in my own head.

My name is Maya Phillips. I'm the arts critic fellow at the New York Times. And I cover a variety of things mostly theater, but I also write about movies, TV, sometimes books, sometimes art, basically anything.

1. Start with a visceral reaction.
直感的な反応から始めましょう。

If you have this or reaction to something whether it's really positive or really negative, just lean into that, figure out why, where that feeling is coming from. And think it through because if you're having some kind of strong reaction to a piece or even if you're having a very ambivalent reaction. 

実際肯定的なものであれ、否定的なものであれ、あなたが何かに反応したら、それにこだわって、その感情が何故、どこから来ているのかを探ってみてください。もし、自分がある作品に強く反応したなら、あるいは相反する反応をしたならば、その理由をとことん考えてください。

That's really important and surely someone else can will be sharing that reaction. Figure out where that's coming from, what about the production, or the show, the characters, the acting, the staging, the set, the story, what is reaching out to you.     

そのことが本当に重要なことで、きっと他の誰かも同じ反応を示すでしょう。その反応がどこから来ているのか、その作品やショー、キャラクター、演技、演出、セット、ストーリーなどはどうだったか、何があなたに語りかけているのかを掴みましょう。

2. Make a persuasive argument.
説得性のある意見を持とう

If it's your first time writing a review, it's good to remember that it is just a piece of persuasive writing, you are just making. You're just giving your opinion and persuading your reader of that of why you think that way .

初めてレビューを書くのであれば、それは人を説得する文章を書くことだということを覚えておくといいと思います。あなたはまさに自分の意見を述べ、そして自分がなぜそのように考えるかについて、その読み手にを説得しようとしているのです。

So, just think of your basic essay structures. You want to have your thesis up top. 
You want to have a nut graph which will have the details of what you're going to get into and just outline your points and make the reader understand where coming from even if they don't have to agree. They just have to understand how you got to the opinion that you have about this piece of work.

ですから、基本的な文章の構成を考えてみましょう。まずはじめにテーマを書きますね。それには、「ナッツグラフ」が必要です。ナッツ・グラフは、あなたが書こうとしていることの詳細と、ポイントの概略を示し、読者にその根拠を分かってもらうためのものです。読者が同じように考えるとは限りませんが。読者があなたがこの作品についてどうやってその意見にたどりついてかが分かるだけでいいのです。

3. Have fun with voice and tone
声と口調を楽しもう

In terms of voice you can really be flexible, say you're writing about some kind of cartoon comedy then you can feel free to use a little some more zany language. You get to really show yourself in a way that you might not be able to in other papers.

言葉遣いは自由自在です。例えば、漫画のようなものについて書くのであれば、少しウケそうな言い回しを自由に使えばいいですし、他の論文ではできないような方法で自分自身を表現することができます。

"zany language"とは、

crazy or unusual in a way that is amusing
面白おかしくさせるやりかたで、クレイジーで日常的にはあまり使わない(=zany)
ような言葉（ロングマンより）

です。

"zany"は、[zéini]、（ゼイニィ）と読みます。日本語にはこれにピッタリした表現がないかもしれません。そのうち、「子供がゼイニイ言葉を使うからよく分からない。」という言い方をするようになるかもしれません。( ´艸｀)
