"immigrant"ではなく、"emigrant"という単語もあった。移民に行う健康診断の流れ。

次の画像はイタリアからアメリカへ向かおうと旅だったばかりの移民です。この後ろ姿が希望と不安を物語っています。

この写真にあった英語の説明を読みます。

上の英文の中に、"the Emigrant Aid Societ"という単語が出てきました。"emigrant?" "immigrantではないのか？" ところが、どちらの単語もあるのです。英和辞典では、両方とも、「移民」「移住者」となっていますが・・・

Emigrant and immigrant are related words
An emigrant is someone who leaves her home country to settle in another country. An immigrant is someone who has come from another country to settle in a new place, usually permanently.
"emigrant"と"immigrant"は関係のある単語です。
emigrantは他の国に定住するために故郷を離れる人のこと。
"immigrant"は新しい国で通常永遠に定住するために、他の国からやって来た人のこと。

イラストにあるように、新しい国に落ち着いた人は、immigrantで、まだ定住していない人は、emigrantです。

次のチャートの画像を見てください。船が着いてから入国が許されるまでをチャートにしたものです。
エリス島に着いたら、まず受けなければならないのが・・・

"Medical Inspection"　（健康診断）です。

Medical Inspection
Doctors scanned the moving line pf immigrants, looking for signs of illness.
The healthy were allowed to pass.
医師たちは順番待ちで並んでいる移民たちにざっと目を通して病気の兆候を示している人を探し出します。健康な人は次のステップに進むことができました。

Those who appeared ill were marked with chalk and sent for further medical examination.
具合が悪そうな人はチョークでマークを書かれ、精密検査に回されました。

Further Medical Inspection　　精密検査
Doctors gave immigrants a more thorough check up which could include a brief overall physical or mental examination.
医師たちはさらに細かい健康検査をします。そこに体全部の短時間の検査や精神的な異常がないかを診る検査が含まれています。

Some were given a clean bill of health and returned to the inspection line.
健康証明書を渡された人は検査対象の列に戻されました。

Other had to be sent to the hospital.

The sick were taken to Ellis Island hospital for observation and care.

Once they had recovered, they could proceed with their legal inspection.

Those with incurable or disabling ailments, however, were excluded end sent back to their homelands.
