(Bloomberg) -- US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pressed her Japanese counterparts to move forward on LGBTQ rights ahead of the Group of Seven summit in May, even as she praised the country’s investment in infrastructure.

(ブルームバーグ） -- アレクサンドリア・オカシオ・コルテス米下院議員は、5月の主要国首脳会議（G7）を前に、LGBTQの権利を前向きに検討するよう日本側に迫った。一方日本のインフラへの投資を称賛した。

“I believe as a collective in the G-7 it’s important to send a message about what precisely aligns these countries,” the New York Democrat told Bloomberg News. “In that context, I think it’s critical that Japan takes steps to move toward recognition of LGBT communities broadly, not just marriage equality.”

ニューヨーク選出の民主党議員である彼女はブルームバーグ・ニュースに対し、次のように述べた。「G7のメンバー国として、この加盟国が実に一つにまとめているものが何かということに関するメッセージを発信することが重要だと考えています。」、「そういった意味で、日本は結婚の平等だけでなく、広くLGBTのコミュニティを認める方向に進むことが重要だと思っています。」

Japan is preparing to host the G-7 summit of advanced democracies in May as the only member not to recognize same-sex marriage or legally protect LGBTQ rights amid stiff debate on the issue.
 
日本は5月に開催される先進国首脳会議（G7サミット）を控えているが、同性婚を認めず、LGBTQの権利を法的に保護しない唯一のメンバー国ということで、厳しい議論にさらされている。

At last year’s summit in Germany, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida signed a G-7 communique affirming “shared values” with the other members and committing to “ensuring that everyone – independent of their gender identity or expression or sexual orientation — has the same opportunities and is protected against discrimination and violence.”

岸田文雄首相は昨年のドイツでのサミットで、他のメンバーとの「共通の価値観」を確認し、「性自認や表現、性的指向にかかわらず、誰もが同じ機会を持ち、差別や暴力から保護されるようにする」ことを約束するG7加盟国の正式表明に署名した。

Japan’s parliament is currently wrestling over a bill to “promote understanding” of LGBTQ issues, though some conservatives oppose a clause saying that discrimination shouldn’t be allowed. Numerous polls show a majority of the public is in favor of allowing same-sex marriage, however.

日本の国会は現在、保守派の中にLGBTQ法案に対して、「差別を許してはならない」という条項に反対する人もいて、LGBTQに対する「理解を促進するための」法案成立に向けてもめている最中である。しかし、多くの世論調査では、過半数が同性婚を認めることに賛成している。

“The United States and Japan’s shared commitment to the democratic principles of freedom, equality, and diversity must extend to LGBTQ individuals,” Congressman Mark Takano, the leader of the delegation, added in an email to Bloomberg, urging Japan’s parliament to consider legislation swiftly.
 
「自由、平等、多様性という民主主義の原則に対する日米共通の責務は、LGBTQの人々にも及ぶべきです」と、代表団のリーダーであるマーク・タカノ下院議員はブルームバーグへのEメールで付け加え、日本の国会に法案の早期審議を促した。

The first openly gay person of color to be elected to Congress, Takano is a co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus.

タカノ議員は、ゲイであることを公表している有色人種として初めて下院議員に当選し、米国議会平等コーカスの共同議長も務めている。

The group met with senior members of Kishida’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, including Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara, former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and trade minister Yasutoshi Nishimura.

一行は、木原誠二官房副長官、菅義偉元首相、西村康稔通商相ら岸田氏率いる自民党幹部と面会した。

Ocasio-Cortez raved about Japan’s infrastructure after traveling on the shinkansen high-speed rail network, a trip she shared with her 8.6 million followers on Instagram.

オカシオ・コルテス氏は、新幹線で移動後、日本のインフラについて絶賛し、その様子を860万人のインスタグラムのフォロワーに送った。

“It is so critically important that the US begin serious investments in high-speed rail and I believe it’s critically important that those investments be federally led,” she said.

その中で、彼女は、米国が高速鉄道への本格的な投資を開始することは非常に重要であり、その投資が連邦政府主導で行われることが非常に重要だと思います」と述べた。

She was echoing remarks by US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, who has often eschewed the armored BMW that comes with his office to take the train. He has spoken of high-speed rail as an opportunity for US-Japan economic collaboration.

Ocasio-Cortez and the congressional delegation also visited Fukushima, the site of the devastating 2011 nuclear disaster, and will be traveling with Japanese lawmakers to Seoul for trilateral talks with their South Korean counterparts later in the week, she said.

オカシオ・コルテス氏と議会代表団は、2011年の壊滅的な原発事故の現場である福島も訪れ、週後半には日本の議員とともにソウルに移動し、韓国側と三者会談を行う予定だということだ。
